8 Reasons Why Babies Cry and How to Help Them

Listed below are the 8 common reasons for crying in babies and what you can do to help them.

1. Hunger

Hunger is one of the common reasons why babies cry. The first and the foremost thing that you can do is comfort your baby. Lift her and try to sooth her, hold her close to you. Feed her properly. Once she is full she will doze off to sleep. If she is not feeling sleepy, place her on her play-mat with her toys. Let her have some fun playtime.

2. Irritation

There are many little things that we can’t even image can make the little buddies cry. It can be an itchy cloth, infection, tiny bumps or simply a strand of hair tangled in your child’s finger, toe or any other body part. To find out what actually is irritating your child, you can do a thorough check of your child’s body. You also need to check your baby’s mouth and find if something is causing trouble over there.

3. Lethargy

Not only adults but also little babies can feel lethargic and tired. Travelling, attending a party or simply an outing can make them feel tired. They may feel like going to sleep immediately. In this case, freshen-up your baby by giving a sponge bath or just by wiping her with warm water. Feed her and then place her in the crib. If she is very tired she will go off to sleep immediately.

4. Need to Be Pacified

Sometimes your baby may just cry for no reason. She may just want you to hold her and pamper her. She may be longing for your warmth and love. This may happen in case of working mothers who start working when their babies are too young. Hold your baby up, pamper her and see the magic and pamper her.

5. Teething Pain

When babies start teething they may experience irritation and pain. Getting a good teetherrecommended by your doctor can help. Wash your hands thoroughly and rub your fingers on your baby’s gums gently. Rubbing baby’s gums can ease teething pain and irritation that is experienced by her. You can also give her a cold wash cloth which she can chew-on.

6. Colic

The reasons for the colic are not clearly known. Some possible cause for it can be indigestion, allergy, intolerance to certain food items, hunger, overfeeding, distress in family or some unidentified health disorder.

7. Dirty or Wet Diapers

Dirty or wet diapers can cause irritation to babies. In fact leaving babies in dirty or wet diapers for longer time can cause issues like diaper rashes in them. So, if you find your baby irritated, check her diapers and change them if you find them dirty or wet.

8. Trapped Air

If you find that your baby is irritable after feeding, it can be due the problem of trapped air. So, after the feed you can sit her up and gently rub her back gently. You can also place her on your shoulder and rub her back gently until she burps.

The above mentioned are some of the probable causes of crying in babies. However, if your baby is crying for a prolonged period and you are unable to help her in any way, you should consult your doctor. In certain cases babies may cry for a prolonged period and stop on their own after calming them. But to be on a safer side, you can take your doctor’s opinion in case of colic and crying for prolonged period.
