Miscarriages

Miscarriages

The chances of miscarriage are very high during first trimester. The risk of miscarriage reduces by second trimester and is minimal during the last trimester. Read on to learn more about the causes of miscarriage and tips for preventing it.
Miscarriage takes place when the foetus is unable to survive inside the womb leading to a sudden termination of pregnancy. It is one of the common complications that take place during pregnancy. The chances of miscarriage are higher during the first trimester of pregnancy. However, it can take place during second and third trimester as well. Let us take a look at the common causes of miscarriages during the first, second and third trimester.

What are the common causes of miscarriages?

Miscarriages generally take place in the first two trimesters. The chance of a miscarriage in the third trimester is extremely low.

First trimester

  • Hormonal imbalance due to deficiency of progesterone making the uterine environment less receptive
  • Chromosomal abnormalities of the foetus

Second Trimester

  • Incompetent os i.e. weakness of the cervical muscles
  • Excessive water i.e. hydramnios
  • Low-lying placenta causing bleeding and consequently abortion
  • Lifting heavy weights

Third Trimester

  • Very low chances of miscarriage
  • After 28th week, it is considered premature labour

What kinds of women are at high risk for a miscarriage?

  • Pregnancy with twins or multiple babies
  • Women who conceive with IVF treatment for hormonal imbalance
  • Women with abnormalities of the uterus

When should I try to conceive again after a miscarriage?

There is no one answer for when you should try to conceive again after a miscarriage. It entirely depends upon the reason for miscarriage. For example, in the case of foetal anomaly, genetic counselling of both parents is a must before the next conception. In the case of intrauterine viral infection, it has to be treated first before another conception can be planned.

What are the signs and symptoms of miscarriage?

Have a quick look at some of the common signs and symptoms of miscarriage.
  • Vaginal spotting or bleeding
  • Brownish discharge or discharge of fluid from vagina
  • Abdominal pain
  • Cramps in abdominal area
  • Pain in lower back
  • Stomach pain
  • Dizziness or light-headedness
  • Discharge of blood clots from vagina
  • Absence of the movement of foetus (foetal movements are experienced by fourth or fifth month of pregnancy)
If you notice any of the above mentioned symptoms, you must report to your doctor immediately. If early signs of miscarriage are observed, it is possible to save the foetus with right medical treatment.

How to prevent a miscarriage?

Miscarriages can be prevented by taking right care and precautions during pregnancy. Here are some preventive measures that you can take during pregnancy in order to avoid miscarriage.
  • Avoid eating too much of heat inducing foods.
  • Avoid eating raw and undercooked foods especially raw eggs, raw meat etc.
  • Do not lift heavy weights.
  • Avoid eating stale and leftover foods.
  • Practice relaxation techniques to prevent stress.
  • Have balanced and healthy meals.
  • Avoid unhealthy habits like smoking, taking drugs, taking alcoholic drinks etc.
  • Do not miss your antenatal check-ups.
  • Take prenatal supplements as prescribed by doctor.
  • Do not take any over-the-counter medicine or any other medicine for treating common illnesses.
  • Do not take any medicine without your obstetrician’s prescription.
  • Stay away from pets and do not clean pet litter.
With proper medical attention, miscarriages can be prevented. Therefore, take right care of yourself and consult your obstetrician immediately if you feel any discomfort. Discuss your pregnancy diet with your obstetrician and do not add anything new in your diet without consulting him or her.
