Is Your Baby a Looker, a Listener, or a Mover? Checklist

Is Your Baby a Looker, a Listener, or a Mover? Checklist

Dr. Bradway's Learning Style Quickcheck for Infants, Birth to Twelve Months of Age

Directions: Place a check next to all behaviours that are characteristic of your infant. Then, total the checks in each category (looker, listener, or mover), to determine which learning style he or she favours.

MY BABY IS A LOOKER

Communication

When he wishes to express himself

  • He points to what he wants
  • He responds with gestures, not words
  • He plays very quietly
  • He likes to observe goings on, rather than participate
  • He didn't babble until late in his first year
Favourite Toys and Pastimes

When my baby plays

  • He likes dangling toys, colour and motion
  • He is visually alert
  • He looks at picture books
Motor Skills

When my baby moves about

  • He watches his hands while playing
  • He reached for objects before five months of age
  • He likes to explore small objects with his hands
  • He likes to pick up and place small pieces, and enjoys puzzles and shape sorters.
Ways to Soothe

When my baby is fussy

  • He is quieted by the sight of a familiar face
  • He is calmed by a familiar toy
  • He is easily distracted by a change of scenery

MY BABY IS A LISTENER

Communication

When he wishes to express himself

  • He babbled early and frequently
  • He said his first word before age one
  • He follows directions easily
  • He tries to imitate words spoken by others
  • He uses inflection when vocalizing
Favourite Toys and Pastimes

When my baby plays

  • He likes rattles and noisemakers
  • He likes rhymes, songs and finger plays
  • He seems to 'eavesdrop' on conversations
  • He babbles to his toys
Motor Skills

When my baby moves about-

  • He was slow to sit up, and more interested in babbling
  • He is consumed by talking, not walking
  • He prefers riding toys that make noise
  • He uses toys mainly to create sounds
Ways to Soothe

When my baby is fussy-

  • He is quieted by the sound of a familiar voice
  • He is calmed by music
  • He is easily distracted by a xylophone or a piano

MY BABY IS A MOVER

Communication

When he wishes to express himself-

  • He uses gestures rather than words
  • He is prone to tantrums
  • He shakes his head to indicate "No."
  • He grabs at objects and toys impulsively
  • He rarely babbles at all
Favourite Toys and Pastimes

When my baby plays-

  • He likes being bounced and tickled
  • He likes to be rocked, cuddled and held
  • He often kicks at his crib mobile
  • He enjoys the swing and bike rides
Motor Skills

When my baby moves about-

  • He sat without support before six months of age
  • He crawled before eight months, and walked before age one
  • He is very active
  • He used riding toys before ten months of age
Ways to Soothe

When my baby is fussy-

  • He is quieted by being picked up
  • He is clamed by being held and rocked
  • He is easily distracted by a massage or car ride

i could not really make out whether my baby is a listener or a looker. and then, are there any conclusions based on whether the baby is looker/mover/listener ? i mean, how is this classification useful ?

i think, most babies are a combination of the three classes and identifying the child this way is not any useful neither to the parents or to the child itself.
