6 Ways to Improve Your Child's Reading Skills
Being a good reader helps kids perform academically well. Parents know what would work for their kids and so they can help their children become good readers with the help of some tips. Read on to learn about tips to improve reading skills of your children.

If you want to make your kids excel in academics and become a good reader, you should follow mainly two pieces of advice. You should make your children read more and help them have love of reading. Reading more can make your child a good reader, but without love of reading they would not do it. So, the first thing that is most important is to create interest in your children and this you can do by starting as early as possible.

Tips to improve reading skills of kids

Follow these 6 ways to improve the reading skills of your child.

1. Read to your kids regularly

Experts are of the opinion that reading out loud to kids daily can make them understand and excel in pronunciation, reading comprehension and increasing vocabulary. If your child is a pre-schooler it will be easier for you to start and follow, but even if your child is in her pre-teens, you can start on this immediately. This will increase their want to read independently.

2. Provide your kids enough reading materials

Children love books with pictures. Let your child start with books having lots of pictures with description. It is also seen that children who have different types of reading materials in their homes, do better in school and score high in standardized tests. Considering their reading levels, provide your kids, books and magazines and put the books in bedroom, living room, near the TV and even in the car to help them get tempted.

3. Set aside a time for family reading

Children follow what their parents do. So, set aside a time when the entire family reads something or the other silently. This will create independent reading habit in your child. When she will see you reading, she will automatically find it interesting. Make sure you provide books of her field of interest so that she catches up with the habit quickly.

4. Encourage other reading activities

There are many educational games available from which you can choose some. Speller or spell-o-fun is one such game that will help your child increase her vocabulary. You can also encourage your child to read different types of things and information while riding in the car or waiting for public transport or simply anywhere.

5. Take your child to a library

Plan a trip to your local library at regular intervals. Make the card in your child’s name also so that she gets encouraged to have a list of books issued in her name. She will also learn how to keep the books issued from library.

6. Track your child’s progress and stay updated

When you are trying to improve reading skills of your child, it becomes very important that you track the progress of your child in this field and be knowledgeable. Track the improvement in standardized tests and gradually increase the level of reading as well.
Reading helps open a world of knowledge, adventure, culture and diversity to kids. This also helps develop curiosity and love of reading in them. Developing reading skills is very important in kids because this is the base of other learning skills of your child. The above tips would be of great help for you. However, if you find that even after trying your best, your child is not developing interest in reading, find out if she is suffering from any reading problem. If yes, it is advisable to get help quickly for reading problems.
