On the occasion of Lord Rama’s birthday, there are celebrations held all across India. Lord Rama was a great soul who is remembered for his noble qualities. He was an incarnation of Vishnu and lived in India several thousand years ago. He was the king of Ayodhya and he was born on the ninth day of the lunar month – Chaitra. He is an important deity especially for those Hindus who follow the Vaishnava tradition.

Hindus residing in India and other parts of the world celebrate this festival. People visit temples and take part in the festivities with joy and fervour. Temples organize recitals of Ram Katha and stories of Lord Rama are told. Devotees sing bhajans and participate in Puja, Aarti and Kirtan. Some pious believers fast on this day.
You can take miniature statues of Lord Rama and start by bathing it and placing in a cradle. Temples also decorate the statues of Lord Rama with Sita. Devotees can offer flowers at home and clothe the statues before offering their prayers. You can rock the cradle with the idol symbolizing that you are celebrating his birth just the way you are happy when you rock your baby’s cradle. If you do not have an idol, you can also place Lord Rama’s photo at home and offer your obeisance.

Ram Navami in Ayodhya

Ayodhya was the birth place of Lord Ram where he is said to have been the ruler for more than 10,000 years. He was dedicated to the people of his kingdom and the people there were very much devoted to him.
Even today people in Ayodhya start the occasion of Ram Navami by taking a dip in the river Sarayu before going to the temple. Sarayu - the ancient river is also mentioned in early Hindu texts. It passed through the kingdom of Lord Ram in ancient India.
Rathyatras are undertaken in many parts of Ayodhya and various other states in India every year and people walk in huge numbers along with the chariot chanting the praises of Lord Rama.

Significance of Ram Navami Vrat

Ram Navami is one of the most important festivals of Hindu religion and fasting on this auspicious day properly leads to Mukti or salvation which is the highest goal of human birth as per Hinduism. Fasting is a part of the celebration and some people begin the previous night itself. Those fasting on the occasion of Ram Navami will be the recipients of his blessings and attain peace, wealth, health and prosperity; hence celebrate this festival by doing the vrat.
On this day you can fast and please Lord Ram and simultaneously take care of your body also because it said that fasting provides rest to the various digestive organs.

Hanuman and Lord Ram

It is said that Hanuman was the greatest devotee of Lord Ram hence pray to Hanuman if you want to please Lord Ram. For many people, worshipping Hanuman along with Lord Ram is essential on the auspicious occasion of this festival. On the occasion of Ram Navami, people decorate pictures of Lord Ram, Lord Hanuman, Sita and Lakshman. It is said that worshipping Hanuman on this day will help one gain immense strength and courage to overcome various hurdles in life.
In many places, people take out yatras or processions of Lord Ram along with Hanuman, Sita and Lakshmana. Lord Ram was extremely fond of Hanuman and many people consider worshipping Hanuman as equivalent to worshipping Lord Ram.
