Top 5 Independence Day Activities for Kids
Carrying out Independence Day activities with kids is a must to inculcate a sense of patriotism in them. Have a quick look at the top 5 Independence Day activities for kids right away.
Independence Day in India falls on 15th August and this is the best opportunity for kids to appreciate the rich history and culture of their country India. Instead of the typical Independence Day School Lunch, Flag Hoisting and Parade most kids are not really exposed to fun activities centred on this day. This has led to lack of interest and apathy on part of the kids about the Independence Day significance. Here are some best activities to engage kids in on Independence Day.

Make an Independence Day Guide

If you have very young kids then it is your duty as a parent to teach them the significance of Independence Day. This can best be done by collecting pictures, graphics and fact sheets about Indian Independence and presenting them as a power point presentation or a customized video. Include things like significance of National Flag, National Anthem, National Bird, National Animal etc. If your kids are a little older then you can also make them listen to the President’s speech on this day.

Independence Day Art

Go creative and ask your kids to make Independence Day centric art. A conventional choice would be Independence Day centric drawings, a more fun activity would be to make an attractive Independence Day Pinwheel with pieces of white paper, orange, green and saffron pens, glue sticks and scissors. All you have to do is to keep turning the paper round and round on itself till it takes the shape of a pinwheel. You can know that your pinwheel is working fine when it effortlessly glides in the wind. This is a great piece of Independence Day art that you can proudly display at home.

Independence Day Movie Marathon

Some Bollywood movies do teach the true essence of Independence in a very effective way. If your kids love movies then the best way to get them to imbibe the spirit of independence and patriotism may be throughout the celluloid. There are a lot of good movies you can watch together with your kids on this day like The Legend of Bhagat Singh, Border, Roja, Lagaan, Rang De Basanti, Mangal Pandey etc. If your kids are a little older like in their teens then you can show them the movies Gandhi and Mother India. Arrange for some delicious snacks and make sure that you keep some lemonade ready for refreshing taste buds during the Independence Day movie marathon.

Play Independence Day Games

Independence Day is a great day to teach your kids some basic facts about the Indian Freedom struggle and the country India. One of the best ways you can do this is to create an Independence Day quiz contest for your kids and their friends. The winners of the contest can get Indian Flag embellished Tees or Tricoloured Bags. Another good way to increase knowledge about India is to buy an India shaped puzzle game and solve it with your kids. The latter idea will work well if you have very small kids while the former can be practiced with a little older kid too.

Bake a Tricolour Cake

This may sound irrelevant but baking a cake with tricolour icing is one of the best ways to celebrate Independence Day in a fun way with your kids. Make sure that you involve your kids in every step of the cake making process right from mixing the ingredients to baking the cake and preparing the icing. Explain to your kids the significance of the colours of the icing like how saffron stands for courage, white stands for peace and green for fertility. You can also make any other tricolour dish of your choice.
These interesting Independence Day activities will never let your kids feel bored on this important day.
