 Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What is douching? How harmful is it to the baby? I am afraid I have been doing it quite frequently. I am almost 8 months pregnant.

Rajnandini (Chicago, USA)

A: Douching refers to vaginal washing using antiseptic or antibiotic solution under some amount of pressure. Ideally we do not recommend douching in pregnancy as it may lead to membrane rupture and the antibiotics may reach the intra amniotic space and hence get transferred to the foetus. Why do you require douching? Kindly let us know. The only from of douching advised in pregnancy is with water acidified with vinegar. I advise you to stop doing it.
