Frequently Asked Questions

Q: I have been feeling extremely itchy of late. The doctor feels this will continue till I deliver. I had malaria a month ago. Are there any precautions I should take?
Olivia (New Jersey, USA)

A: Drugs for malaria can cause itching. Pregnancy too causes itching. In addition there are certain infections which can cause profuse itching - Scabies and Hepatitis. It is imperative that a perfect diagnosis be made before starting treatment. While you can apply CALAMINE lotion for temporary relief, drug therapy necessarily has to be after examination and history taking. Please get in touch with your dermatologist for quick relief.

Q: I am 34 weeks pregnant and have recently developed an itching sensation all over my body, especially on the abdomen. It is uncontrollable and I keep scratching myself all over. What should I do? I am worried that I may develop stretch marks. I am also facing gastric problems.
Jalpa (Ghaziabad, India)

A: Try taking some vitamin E capsules, and take a antihistaminic which will relieve the itching. The skin on the stomach has to be moisturised with vitamin-E cream during pregnancy to avoid stretch marks, and any scratching on the stomach should be done gently.
