Know Your Child's Rights (Basic Rights of Children)

Know Your Child's Rights (Basic Rights of Children)

It is important for parents to be aware of their child’s rights and make their children aware of their basic rights. By being aware of the rights of children parents can not only safeguard their children but also protect other children from exploitation. Read on to learn about ‘Child Rights in India’ and spread awareness about it to stop exploitation of children.

Child rights are universally defined by United Nations and United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC). The rights stated here are said to be the minimum freedom and entitlements that should be provided to those below 18 years irrespective of caste, creed, language, religion, sex, place of birth, wealth, ability, birth status and colour. These rights are considered indivisible and interdependent.

Child Rights in India

Have a quick look at the child right in India.

Right to Education

Every child has the right to education and parents must see to it that their children are not deprived from the basic education.

Right to Nutrition

Reports suggest that around 50% of children in India are malnourished. 1 in every 5 boys and 1 in every 2 girls is said to be malnourished.

Right to Protection from Abuse

Reportedly around 2 million Indian children are associated with sex trade. They are said to constitute around 40% of the population. More than 50,000 children are forced into the flesh trade every year.

Right to Health and Care

Around 60% of the Indian children are not vaccinated fully. 60% of the children are reported to be anaemic. 95% of them do not survive till their fifth birthday and around 1000 of them die before turning a year old.

Right to Protection from Exploitation

According to official estimates around 17 million children are engaged in some form of work. In most of the cases they are forced to earn the bread and butter. Poor families also "sell" their children to contractors promising alluring jobs. Children in the process end up working as domestic help, in brothels and hotels.

Right to Development

Each and every child in India has been given the right to explore his or her full potential. Unfortunately many of them end up living in unfavourable conditions.

Right to Protection from Neglect

Every single child has the right to living a well protected life. Many of them unfortunately work under inhuman and exploitative conditions and are left highly neglected.

Right to Survival

Out of the 12 million born in India, 3 million are not fortunate enough to see their 15th birthday. Millions of the girls die before their 1st birthday. Death of every 6th girl child is because of gender discrimination.

Right to Recreation

Every child in India has the right to spend time in recreational pursuits. They are free to pursue their favourite hobby, sports or entertainment. Most of the underprivileged children unfortunately do not get this scope.

Right to Name and Nationality

A child in India has the right to identify herself with the country. Most of the underprivileged children here are treated like commodities and often sold as labour or prostitutes.

Right to Information

Every child must be aware of his or her basic rights. Ignorance and illiteracy has made it difficult for them to be aware of their rights.

Right to Expression

A child must have the freedom to express him or herself completely. Most of the children in this country are exploited and cannot express themselves freely.
The National Commission for Protection of Child Rights has been set up as a statutory body to ensure the child rights are not violated and properly enforced. This commission looks into a complaint lodged and takes suo motu notice of the case. The body aims at reviewing and examining the rights to safeguard interest of the children.

How to spread awareness about the ‘Child Rights in India’? How to make kids aware of their basic rights? How to stop exploitation of children and teach children to fight for their basic rights? Discuss here.
