Buddhist Place of Worship in India

  • The Ajanta and Ellora caves near Aurangabad in the state of Maharashtra contain massive images of the Buddha as well as Mahavira.
  • Lion Pillar at Sarnath erected by the Emperor Ashoka. Since Sarnath was also the place where Buddha preached the doctrine of Dharma, the wheel of Dharma has been inscribed on The Lion Pillar. The wheel of Dharma, also called the Dharma Chakra, has been adopted as an emblem that is placed on the centre of the National flag.
  • The Buddhist stupa is a hemispherical dome-like structure made of stone. Within the stupa and directly below the dome, is a casket in which are preserved relics of Buddha. One cannot enter the stupa, but merely go around it on what is known as a pradakshina path that is specially created for the purpose. In India, the most notable is the Sanchi stupa 60 km from Bhopal in the state of Madhya Pradesh.
