Problems in School:5th grader overwhelmed with studies

My daughter who started her LKG (CBSE) at 3.3 years was very enthusiastic and was performing quite well in the beginning though lot of people felt that she started her schooling too early. Now at 9.3 she has just started her 5th grade and with the introduction of an additional language coupled with longer hours at school I feel that she is quite overwhelmed and burdened. She is one of the youngest in her class and I feel that she is having difficulties coping up. As a result she comes home with incomplete classwork and does not tell me what is bothering her exactly except to tell me that she does not mind going back to 4th grade. She will have regular exams from this year and I am already worried as to how she will perform. Now that she has to use only pens her writing speed has slowed down and I find her very unenthusiastic. Can anyone advise me on ways to help my child?

Is she getting enough sleep? And is she eating properly....I mean healthy food? I read in an article that most of the child who doesn' t concentrate or doesn' t complete their work in time is lacking in sleep. As far as you think she' s eating and sleeping properly........you can think of other reasons and how to handle it. Actually my daughter is also the youngest in the classroom.....and also she' s in combo class of 1st & 2nd graders where almost 3/4th of the majority is very much elder. She' s new to this school she' s going now..........she has trouble with the kids. The kids are really really mean and she doesn' t have any friends or anyone to playwith.........she' s so upset .....she gets distracted easily and always seem to think about somthing while doing her work. But she' s been doing well and improved a lot since she started the school. Am just trying to help her by telling her that she will find good friends and talk about how amny good poeple are arnd her.

So .....anyway what am trying to say is, find out how she' s doing at school........just talking to the teacher. Don' t say anything bad about your child to her teacher........just ask her that you want to know how' s she' s doing and all.....and how can you improve her studies wih your help and so on. you may be able to figure out something what' s really hapening and why she' s not able to finish up her work. And talk to her that you are very proud of her........ that she being younger in the class and doing so well and that you want to help her with anything to do her get better.

May be you can help her organise her work and awrd her is she completes her work in time. I have a chart made for my daughter and we have told her that every time she gets 50 points on her chart she will get something surprise. She might do better and faster. And tell her if she completes her school work at school...you will spend that time by doing something she likes to do with you.

Never talk to her about going back to 4th grade if she doesn' t do well...may be you can talk positively by saying that if she does well she can go to higher class and learn a lot of new things.....and learning is always fun . Make her beilive that she can do it...and always have a positive attitude.

And also if you can find out how the test questions will be...u can give her the same kinda test with less question and see how she' s doing and may be you can analyse how you can help!

Hope this helps a little bit atleast. let me know what else you feel. Take care!

Thank you very much for taking time to give me your insights. Your positive hints will surely help me. I do see a noticeable change in her since I posted my initial message. She no longer talks about going back to 4th std. I am being positive at all times. I even met her teacher and explained that my daughter is a bit overwhelmed and to be understanding towards her. I will however keep in mind what you have advised. Thanks once again.

Thanks Ramya, for your response. This is the first year she will be facing exams. While there is still a bit of time until the exams, the concern at hand now is her incomplete classwork and any advice on how to deal with this issue will be highly appreciated.
