Hi,
I am staying with my in laws and my family. I have a 8 month old son. My MIL is absolutely against feeding ghee to my son, saying it would lead to diseaes.. My son is not overweight. He is tall for his age(73 cms and around 9 kgs). Is ghee harmful for babies?? My MIL says to give only quarter teaspoon of it everyday......What should i do????? Please help me here

Hi Diana,

My son is 8+ months now. I have been giving him ghee from past 1 month now. I mix a lil ghee in his khichdi, raagi and upma.
Hetal, Neetu correct me if I am wrong. I have read that ghee contains cholestrol, ,which is very essential for infant brain cells development.
Also, you can consult with your ped.
HTH,
Monika

Some doctors believe giving extra fat to babies increases their chances of having high cholesterol later in life as also with high blood pressure if giving salt .That could be the reason why your mil does' nt want you to give ghee .Personally i was giving my 10 month old son very little ghee but then i stopped after a friend whose aunt is a doc had told her not to give butter or ghee to her son for the same reason as i mentioned earlier although my son' s pedi was okay with it .My thinking is if they r burning a lot of energy like when they start being mobile it should be okay to start then as they r sort of exercising ,thats just my reasoning but you can always ask your son' s pedi.

Hi Diana,

I dont know what kind of ghee you are referring to but i dont think ghee is bad for babies. I use pure ghee for almost all of my sons food- e is 9 monyhs old now and have been using it for him for the past 2 months.
Apart from pure ghee i also use tinned ghee verka brand. so i dont think ghee is bad for them.
