Hello ! I have a 14 month old who doesn' t like to eat except yobaby only. He is in the bottom percentile weight - just 19 pounds. I generally spoonfeed and that too by tricking. Now it' s getting difficult. If I offer anything as fingerfood - chapati or veggies that can be picked up ! one or two goes into the mouth and nothing else. I am so confused what to do. I have even tried starving for like 3-4 hrs. but nothing works. I want to know how I should offer and then if nothing works should I just offer milk or some thing else. Pl. Pl. help ! Any tips will make my day !! Thanks for your time !

Hi Neha,
I can understand your state of mind, as i too in between had the same problem, but i never let it slw me down or never did i sit back thinking that its just a phase. Yes i left him once or twice cause he wouldnt take more than 2 spoons, but i never gave up. So i wil tell u the same. Keep trying. He will eat! for sure!

Give him stuff he enjoys eating. There must be that 1 single thin he likes, give it to him. Add that to all his food to start off with and then once he starts eating a little better remove that item.

play with him while feeding him. Make feeding time also a playtime.

Jus keep your cool and dont give up!
Your son will be fine.

Good luck

my baby is eating well. she is 95% at weight.my second twin is also 90%.

both are having differences of taste, flavours and textures. i change it everynow and then & thus it helped.sometimes i make 2-3meals for them. even if they eat some spoons of each i am more than happy ! i see my efforts in thir weight.

i will not agree to you neelima. each baby is different. i think this is your 2nd or 3rd message where you are saying that this is phase.

if what you said is true, both of my twin kids would have lost their apetite in their 12-16months of age.

they both are 18months now and are doing great in their weight. inspite of going to daycare and parks they have never got a viral fever or cold.i think it explains why .

to all mothers, i have a message to tell you. its true that kids always run away from food but as mothers we have to keep trying.

please don' t make a mistake of letting your kids stay away from food. make them eat whatever they like. give them different foods textures and flavours.

once apetite is gone, it is difficult to retrive back.i am not an expert nor i am a professional but i am telling you all this according to what my doc warned me when my kids completed 1year. i took it seriously and i am happy with my decision.

he said that if in this phase your child start running away from food, his immune will struggle more to fight for his body and he might have frequent health problems or something like cold or viral fevers.

most of us do mistake of understanding that this is phase etc etc.believe me even it thought that when i was struggling for making their meals.

he also told me that i should keep trying and as a mother worrying is nothing wrong.i still worry for my kids.

so please neelima don' t take me for wrong but please don' t spread the wrong message if you are not aware of these things.

Hi Anupama...
in the first place..my intention of spreading the so called " WRONG MESSAGE" was just to tell all those worried mohters out there not to be perturbed by this feeding issues.
well for you ANUPAMA"
1) I SAID inspite of giving a heavy meal i said its better to break the same into 2 or 3 meals...so you consider this a WRONG MESSAGE" .
2) What i wrote..it was directly downloaded from the Indian Academy of pediatrics publishing...regarding the phases. Its clearly written infants go through phases and if mothers make the mealtime a battle of sort..they are going to develop into fussy eaters later on in thier life.....you call this spreading a " WRONG MESSAGE" .
3) I said offer " QUALITY" AND NOT QUANTITY FOOD...mothers should not have this notion of the so called " CLEAN PLATE SYNDROME" ...WELL YOU CALL THIS SPREADING A " WRONG MESSGAE" ...
4) 58% OF THE INFANTS loose their appetites only to get back the same in the 16 month...source..IAP Publishing 2001....well your babies are from the rest 42% ..you are a lucky mother..i didnt say all babies will for" SURE" losse their appetites....bY THIS STATEMNT DID I panick you all....
5) Did i say that all mothers " STARVE YOUR KIDS" ...BY leaving the kids to themselves in the food aspect.....DID I?
So Anupama...i think i havnt done any wrong thing to panick mothers in my writting..and i persist with the same thing that " INFANTS GO THROUGH PHASES" .
This message is not to argue with you..dont take me for wrong Anupama...
bye

Hi,
Neha...worrying on this issue will harm you as well as your kid.Just chill.
For your information infants between the age of 12-16 months of age drasticlally are on reduced appetites.Infants go through this phases of growth and slow down.
instead of starving him...offer him little by little every 1 or 2 hrs or so.
offer him quality food and not quantity.
offer him butter, cheese, tofu, green peas, carrot,idli..formuula milk 300 ml. etc.
i assure you as your baby passes this phase..his appetite will return back..
from now on pass this message to all those mothers who are worrying that babies go through certain phases and ther is no need to worry.
