Dear Hetal,
I am a new member to this discussion forum and I want to tell you how much I appreciate your efforts for all the help and advice given to mothers with various questions regarding their baby' s health and development. You have 2 children and still you take the time to answer various questions. Kudos to you, Hetal.
Hetal can you help me out here?
I have a 13 month old baby girl. Her birth weight was 3.25 Kgs. Until the 6 month she gained weight steadily but after that her weight gain is very slow. Now at 13 months she weighs only 7.5 Kgs.
Her diet schedule is as follows:
7am BM
8:30am--Breakfast--Oat porridge/nachni with milk/cornflakes in milk/french toast.
11:00--Mid morning--50ml milk mixed with little cerelac
11:30-12:30--Nap (somedays its a 30-45 min nap)
1:00pm--Lunch--Rice+dried beans usal/Rice + chicken and veggies/ Pasta in thick gravy/(ending with 1/2 slice of mango or 1/2 banana or 1 slice of apple)
3:pm--50ml milk with little cerelac
3:15-4:00pm--Nap
4:30pm--Snack--Bread/Rice pudding,biscuits in milk
7:00pm--Fruit
8:00pm--Dinner--Same as lunch + fruit
10:00pm--BM--Sleep

** Cows milk for breakfast,and snack = 320ml
** In addition to her breakfast of porridge I try to give her jam/butter and bread but she just eats very little.
** I give 6 morsels of food by hand and then grind up the remaining and feed by spoon.
** At lunch after eating the 6 morsels in the highchair, she gets restless and ends up walking around and eating the remaining ground food.
** At dinner she eats the 6 morsels and then absolutely refuses to eat any more.
** She refuses to drink milk before going to sleep at night and she gets up 3 times at night for BM.
** I have tried various fruit juices, milk with bournvita etc, but she just takes one sip and flatly refuses to drink any more.
** She doesnt drink milk from the bottle only the sippy cup.
** Please can you guide me as to how to get her to drink juice, more milk (esp before nighttime). Is 320ml (in puddings etc)+ 50ml midmorn and sometimes in the evening enough?
** How much qty of Roti, paratha should I feed her?
**She is very active and walking all by herself now.
**Her ped has advised 2ml of calcium supplement and 8 drops of iron daily.
** I am a working mom and have a full time maid.

Thank you for your time.

Hi

Hetal is busy with her two kids I guess we have not seen any posts from her on this board in a long time

I can answer some of your questions based on my exp and hetal' s earlier posts. unfortunately I dont save the msg id' s, Neetu or one of the others may give u Hetal' s diet chart for a 13 month old

** At lunch after eating the 6 morsels in the highchair, she gets restless and ends up walking around and eating the remaining ground food.

This is normal I guess, my 11 month old will not eat a single spoon sitting down. I have to walk behind her with a bowl & spoon. After 30 mins or so the bowl is empty, half the food is in her stomach , the rest is smeared over the whole house:)

** At dinner she eats the 6 morsels and then absolutely refuses to eat any more.

She eats a fruit at 7 and then dinner at 8. I guess she is too full to eat any dinner. Keep at least a 2 - 2.5 hr gap before her dinner. hetal normally recommends that fruit shuld be given at around 11 in the morning

** She doesnt drink milk from the bottle only the sippy cup.

Is this a problem or just a comment ? u r lucky.. parents have a tough time trying to wean the child from bottle to cup

** Please can you guide me as to how to get her to drink juice, more milk

If u r already worried abt her milk intake and weight then dont force her to drink juice. this wil reduce her milk intake and also does not contribute to weight gain
Have u tried giving her fruit based milk shakes ?

** How much qty of Roti, paratha should I feed her?

I dont rememebr accurately.. but I think hetal recommended that a child her age can be fed 1/4 of an adult serving

To increase her wieght u can add a little ghee to her rice & porrdige. Also feed her fruits & veggis like banana, avacado, sweet potato. These help in weight gain
good luck

Hi christine

couldnt reply to u for a few days.

**Is it ok to grind part of her food, or shall I give all food mashed only by hand?

it is beter not to put food in the blender bcoz your baby will get used to the smooth texture and will not accept other textures easily. If she eats hand mashed food dont put it in the blender. But we all know how diff it is to feed a fussy baby and r usually ready to do anything if she will eat easily :) so I guess what u r doing is right, continue giving her a combination of both, gradually increase the qty of hand mashed food

** As I feed her BM only twice a day, is 50-100ml of cow´ s milk a sufficient quantity. (Though I add milk to her breafast and snack)

I´ m no expert christine, but I think it´ s a little less. I bf my little one thrice a day, apart from this she drinks abt 150 ml of cows milk.

** I have tried fruit based milkshakes but she doesnt drink more than 2 sips.

** Between the afternoon snack and dinner can I give her milk instead of fruit?

u could. Also give her the snack/milk at 6.30 PM & dinner at 8.30 PM. This may increase her appetite for dinner

Hi Christine,
My baby boy is now 15 months old. From my experience I have come to know that babies start accepting and trying/eating new things other that BM only when u stop giving them BM.
As we r living far from our families, I resorted to putting Neem oil on my breast, the same day my son left BM and (touch wood) now he happily drinks whole milk and likes to eat new food.
And one more thing I have noticed he is attracted by texture and color of the food. So, even u can try giving ur baby food of different colors and textures.

Hello Shweta,

I appreciate your suggestions.

Will try weaning her from BM completely.

Will also work on making the food attractive and presentable. Didnt realise that babies notice these things.
