Feeding:Baby prefers solids to milk

Hi parents,
My son is 7 months old (5 months corrected age as he is 2 months premature). I started feeding my baby solids when he turned 6 months, first with rice cereal, oatmeal and then veggies such as carrots, squash, green beans, sweet potato and then fruits apple, pears, peaches, prunes and banana.
Now he likes his solids so much so that he just wants to eat solids and hates to drink milk.
Cos he has acid reflux, doc prescribed zantac (medicine) and we r giving him twice. Also, he cannot take more than 3 oz of milk at a time, if i feed more he vomits everything. Overall on good days he takes 24 oz of milk (which includes 3 feedings during night) and on bad days(i mean when he refuses to take milk) he takes around 18-20 oz. Other than the milk, he takes 3 feedings of solids (mix of cereal+a veggie+fruit, around 2 oz). If i give him plain cereal, he doesnt eat it and i end up mixing a veggie or fruit to it, so that he eats. If i try to feed him just milk and only 2 servings of solids, he simply doesnt drink milk and so i end up giving him a third serving of solid. So, guys, do u think he is eating good enough and am i worrying too much or am i feeding him too less?
His weight at 6 month checkup was 12 pounds 6 ounces and now it looks like he is around 13.5 lbs (i weigh him at home).
I am planning to give him juice after a week as he is able to digest the fruits n veggies. His bowel movements r regular (2-3 times a day, sometimes just 1). Well, i' ll appreciate any suggestions n advice.
Take care n have fun with ur babies,
Anu

Hi Anu

I' m no expert on baby’s diet but as a mom I think your baby’s food habits r fine. It' s best if milk forms the main part of their diet, if not we have to give them whatever they eat, just try to add a little milk to his cereal or see if he' ll enjoy fruit shakes.

One piece of advice though.. don’t start juice if u feel his milk intake is less. This will fill up his stomach and reduce his milk intake even further. if your baby is eating fruit, drinking plain water and not constipated then there is really no need to give him juice

Hi prao,
Thank you for ur suggestions. I´ ll try not to give him juice for a while, may be i´ ll try giving him juice after 1 or 2 months. I do add little bit of milk to his cereal, so that atleast that way he´ ll have little more milk.
thanks a ton. have fun with ur baby.
take care

Can u brief out..... how to prepare apple and other vegies eatable for my baby.
I tried pressure cooking apple for 4 whisels, smashed it .....it was sweet so i added little milk and gave the baby, initially she took about 1 or 2 small spoon and later she didnt like it.

Hi Salma,
I give my son gerber applesauce (stage 1). It has very smooth texture and i guess thats why he likes it. I tried making applesauce at home (pressure cooked apple and mashed it in little water) and i gave it to him, he never liked. If u give apple or any other fruit to a baby, then he/she should start with nice pureed fruit, so that they will get used to the taste, and then u can change the texture when they r older and accepting the fruit fine. Another trick which helped me to feed my baby fruit is by mixing the fruit in rice cereal, so the taste is not too strong and just enough for the baby to accept it. I hope it works for ur baby too. Good luck and have fun with ur baby.
