Eating Problems:14 mths- still not ready to give up Breatmilk
2006-05-19
Name: Sayali

Hi,

My son is not 14 months old and still cries for breast milk. He has started eating solid food but still asks for breast milk. He is a very healthy and active child, tjere is no problem at all, but he keeps on asking for it.

I want to stop feeding him now. Please give some good ideas.

Thanks

its ok to breastfeed children up to the age of 2. some children just need it to be close to the mother and to feel comforted. my child is almost 17 months old and i still breastfeed and would like to do it as long as she wants it. so don't feel disheartened. feed the child as long as he requires it.

Subject:  stop one feed at a time

Hi ! My son who is two yrs now, left breast feeding about 6 mths back ... but yes it was tough. I had reached a point where I used to hate him even touching me but becoz he used to cry I wud give in and then repent later.
I started with stopping one feed at a time and then slowly wud feed him only when he had to sleep (this was the time when he wud cry the most). After a few days stopped this too and stuck to only night time feeding and whenever he used to wake at night. Gradually all feeds stopped once he was 1 and half. But you need to be tough and not give in to the baby's crying. If you are sure that his stomach is full and is just crying for the sucking bit then be tough. Gradually the child also realises that crying will not help.
All the very best ... I know the constant sucking can drive you crazy , so my best wishes !

Hi!

I was feeding my daughter till 1.11 years. As Anju has suggested, stop one feed at a time.. I tried stopping in the morning hours initially. then started giving by 7 till night and then i made her sleep w/o BM and then stopped whole night later. But the entire process took close to 6-8 months. Try diverting the kid when he cries for that.. take for a walk, play with him... sing / tell stories etc.,

Hope this helps
