Name: Vidhu

Hi All,

I got my chums on Oct 10th as expected. This time we are going for IUI. Hope it works this time. I have insisted my dr to do tests for Fallopian Tube block test. She is gonna do HSG for me. I am nor sure of the difference between HSG & Laproscopy. Also howz the HSG Process?. Is it painful???

Pls clarify as am going to go thru it in 3/4 days..Also not sure how comfortable IUI would be...

laproscopy is sort of minor surgery and hsg is just a test without anesthetic and that's the difference. Otherwise everybody has provided their inputs.

Yes, speculum is the same thing which is used it the PCT.

cramps means spasmodic contractions of the uterus like the one occuring during menses which results in pain in the abdomen , sometimes radiating to the lower back and thighs. (basically its like the pain that u get during menses)

hi vidhu,
i think madhu has clarified things very clearly.in laproscopy you are given genral anesthesia, 3 holes are made on your abdomen & an instrument is passed thru which is connected to a monitor where in docs can directly see your system. this procedure requires 1/2 day admission. you are asked to be on empty stomach from morning. where as is hsg, you don't need any anesthesia. rest is explained clearly by madhu. take courage & go thru the procedure. pls relax your body, let it go lose. the more you tense, it will be more painful. so keep your mind & body relaxed. good luck.

Dear Vidhu,

In continuation to my earlier reply, laparoscopy is not required at this stage. Go as per your doctor's advise.

In IUI also, speculum is placed into the vagina and thru the cervix the husband's washed sperm sample is directly injected into the uterus with the help of a very fine catheter. U are asked to then lied down for some time and then can proceeed with your less strenous work. Iui is not at all painful.
IUI just takes a couple of inutes only.

Relax.

Dear vidhu,

Its important to do HSG before proceeding for IUI because if the fallopian tubes are blocked then IUI will not at all be successful.

HSG is a test to determine whether the fallopian tubes are patent (open) or not. patent tubes are required for egg to travel from ovary to fallopian tubes where it will meet with the sperm and fertilisation will take place and the fertilised embryo will travel from tubes and implant in the uterus. So if the tubes are closed this process will not take place as the egg will not meet the sperm at all.

HSG procedure: U can take a painkiller on doctor's advise just 1 hr before the HSG PROcedure. During the process the sonologist will put the speculum into vagina to hold the cervix , then with a fine catheter dye will be injected through the cervix INTO THE UTERUS and if THE TUBES ARE OPEN THE DYE WILL TRAVEL FROM THE UTERUS INTO THE FALLOPIAN TUBES AND THEN SPILL into the body's general system. This entire process takes just 5 minutes and the sonologist will take instantly take xray and the results a re instantaneous. U will experience mild cramping only. But if the tubes are constricted or closed then u might experience little pain.

If the tubes are closed then the dye will spill out through the vagina.

Do not worry. Its an important test and everything will be alright . Go with a positive attitude.

After the test the doctor will prescribe antiobiotics to be taken for 5 days.

HSG process sometimes also clear the constriccted tubes and paves the way for successful pregnancy.

All the best.

Madhu
