Feeding:Starting formula in India

I am based in the US but am in Madras with 4 month daughter. She is fully on breast milk and I plan to do that until she is 6 months. But I would like to prepare in case my supply reduces or I have to be away from her. I find that breastfeeding mothers here are advised to start with packet milk. Can you give me suggestions whether to start with that or use something like Lactogen or NAN? Those of you in Madras, please share your experience?

Thanks, Ma

Hi ,

I am from Chennai and have been giving my son aavin milk from 4th month onwards . He' s fine apart from some constipation whihc has nothing to do with the milk I am sure.

In my opinion , since you are here temporarily , you should start with formula milk ( maybe lactogen or nan ) . Are these brands available in the US ? Maybe named differently like GoodStart. You can use aavin if you are cooking ragi kanji or something.

By packet milk do u mean the regular dairy milk ?
I have shifted through 3 cities in india (madras was not one of them) before my daughter turned 6 and all the paeds told me not to introduce dairy milk before 9 or 10 months. I was advised to try Lactogen 1. My daughter simply hates it :) So I' m now waiting to try the regular milk when she is a little older

My nephew whose grandfather is a doctor is also being introduced to dilute Aavin milk at 4 months. Same as the case with my nephew in Bangalore two years ago. I was really surprised at that.
