Hello again,

So sorry. I misread Suhanya's message. I am not sure if you guys will again depart from India after delivery, in which case my ideas were misleading. It was meant for people who will deliver in India and stay on there.

I jumped the gun, didn't I?!

Good luck anyway, Aarti

Hi all,

I am from the Jan board and was skimming the other boards, since my son is sleeping a little longer today! Though I am based in US, I spent 6 months in India with baby #1 and will do the same with baby #2.

A few ideas

1) I don't think you need to take diapers to India. I used only cloth diapers there since the weather is very unfriendly to disposable diapers. I used diapers and wipes only when we travelled.

2) Plain water is best to wipe baby's skin at home. Even in the US I have not used wipes.

3) Thanks to elders, babies are toilet trained much faster in India!

4) You can take a few cute outfits just for the difference. Take one or two for age 1, 2 and 3 - for special occasions. Most home and night wear which my son wears in the US is purchased from India.

5) One thing which I found useful were Gerber wash cloths (packs of 6 or 8). It is useful to wipe mouths and sticky fingers. You might get something similar in India but I find Gerber's to be softer.

6) Take a few unique toys. US or UK made toys are available in the larger stores like Lifestyle but even after conversion into $$ they are very expensive.

7) If space permits take some cloth or board books for ages 1-2. There are great books for all other age groups in India. But the sturdy board books (pages made of cardboard) are very very limited and in only a few stores. Again, you will find US made ones in large stores but very expensive. In the US, you will find good bargains at Burlington Coat Factory. Sorry to be frank, but you can get fresh ones even in garage sales for 50 cents to a buck ;-)

8) If you are going to nurse, I really liked the disposable nursing pads from here. Easy to throw away when you are visiting family.

9) I preferred the sippy cups from here. They are a little more sturdy. One or two will be more than enough. I washed them in hot, soapy water and use toothpicks to clean the spouts.

Hope this is a good start.

Good luck!

- Aarti

Hi Suhanya,
Sorry yarr I cannot be of much help here. As for few month we will be using only the cloth nappies so have really no idea about the stuff which you mentioned. Only after 3 or 4 month elder's will allow us to use the Dipers.

as per me carryin baby products to india,i feel its not a very bright idea to carry thngs like wipes n diapers to india.there r a lot of reasons for it.

firstly even if u want u mite not b able to carry the complete supply in yr luggage for the time ull b spendin back in india.carryin the initial supply is not very sensible cos ultimately ull ve to use indian products if yr supplies finish.

secondly we can find everythng in india.im sure ull find wotever u need in yr city.

thirdly the brands of items which r easy n economical in yr current residence mite b very xpensive n rarely available in all stores.

so my suggestion is not to worry bout carryin any stuff to india.my friends here in us try carryin limited supplies sufficient for the travel.once they land in india.they shop in india.

i wonder if these suggestions b of any use to u but still ill chk once again with my friends n relatives here for any add ons

take care
dee

Very good doctor
Hi,

I delived a baby boy in March 2009. I consulted Dr.Chitra Ramamurthy during my pregnancy cycle. She' s one of the best doctors in Bangalore. Not many people know about her. She handled the entire process in a very professional manner. I used to visit her clinic in Jayanagar 3rd block. She is very caring and affable. She says what to do and what not to do. ... - Sandhya Rao [View Message]

So long as your baby is feeding, that' s all that really matters. These days, formulas are packed with everything the baby needs, and although it is never as good as breast milk, it' s perfectly fine. It sounds like maybe what you are missing is the bonding that breast feeding provides? My first child had both breast and bottle milk for the first 6 months, when I had a mis... - Jhumri [View Message]
