Eating Problems:Eating problem for my 3 yr son
2006-02-07
Name: Rinku

My son is 3yr 3mth. He does not eat regular roti, baji, dal chawal. I am a gujarati. When my son was 2yr 10mth, he got typhoid from then on he has stopped eatin properly. He sticks to one item for few days say poha, or upma, or pattice. Then he will not eat that ever. He is very fussy. He likes to eat Lays chips but I am not giving that to him whatever happens cos he gets cough. I try to make different things at home for him but nop use . I try to get him to eat by showing him T.V. or by any means I can think of. Even scolding him but its of no use. He won't eat if doesn't want . My Paediatritian says this is coomon in all children, but I am worried because not eating roti, bhaji etc. will not give him all the necessary nutrients. I try to make all the rotis -subjis-chawal in different style in any way which he will like, but to no avail. Please is there any way to get him to eat proper food. My husband gets mad on me telling to leave it & he will eat when he is hungry but what he eats is biscuits etc.

hi Rinku
My son is 2 years old, since he was 8 months old, he has become a very fussy eater. I have spent days literally crying and being worried about him. But he is a healthy little boy and very active. He still mostly survives on milk. But nowaday, since I stopped fussing him about food, he started eating cereals, bread and biscuits. I know this is not going to provide him with much nutrition but I am just glad that he is atleast willing to eat something. Also if there are other people in your house, then ask them to offer food to him. Thats how my son started eating, when he was left alone with the food. Dont force him, as he will come to hate his food. good luck

hi rinku,
my daughter is same as ur son.she is also fussy eater no matter i try different method or food she still remains.however i will put forward some of tips which might help ur son.
try to make him intersted in food like colour of food or shape.make rotis in front of him or even let him make his own roti .i know it will be mess but its worth a try.
if u have cookie cutter u can cut sandwich into different shapes.

some children have weird taste. what we may like it not necessary ur son will like it.try dosa with jam, honey or sauce.try applying honey or peanut butter to bread.
try buying cups and bowls of his choice.
i have tried this to my daughter sometimes she eats. but i have to keep on inventing new ways to feed her. if any of you have other ideas do send.

hi rinku,

i have a 17 months old baby girl. what i do is i keep all the snacks in a cabinet which i dont open in front of her. i dont give her snacks at all, instead i give her nutritious food after every 2-3hrs. many times i dont offer her anything till she herself points towards the kitchen. your husband is right, i feel kids can never sleep empty stomach. i guess you only need to stop giving her unheathy snacks totally and tell him that they all are over. when he asks for food give him healthy foods. you can make variety of stuffed parathas sometimes. dont give him mild food and add proper spices as we do for our food. make him eat with other family members and dont worry at all as kids do not stay hungry. hope this helps. all the best

hi rinku
don't worry if the child does not eat at that age, they are more fond of snacks and junk food than their actual food. the best way to provide nutrition is by making soups, cereas available and telling them in a nice way that they will be rewarded if they eat dinner. this will work for you.

hi rinku,
this is what even i have to say. As far as the kid is active and is gaining weight there is nothing much to worry even though as mom's we start panicking. Why don't u try giving him something totally different like cornflakes, oats etc. my son also is fussy abt eating. For lunch he hates having rice. So i give him oats mixed with carrot halwa. That way i can ensure that he eats veg also. Try giving him variety foods instead of dal roti. Why don't u try giving him south indian food for a change or continental dishes???
