Feeding:Sleeping thru night

Name: Sarita

My baby boy is 6 and half months old. He has never slept thru night. He wakes up for food and then immediately goes to sleep. The waking up has reduced from 2 times to 1 time now but still 5 hrs is the max he sleeps. I heard 6 mo.s is the limit when babies sleep thru night. His weight is close to 17 lbs. The dr. said he can sleep when he was 2 mo.s but till now it hasnt happened. I tried to give pacifier couple of times but he sucks it so hard and sometimes cries after a while. So seeing him hungry we feed him. He feeds solids and all well. Should I let him continue like this expecting he is really hungry? What is the actual advantage of sleeping thru night for the baby? I understand its comfortable for parents but for the real sake of baby should we let the baby decide when he wants to do that? Please advise on what I can do if so. thanks.

hi ! i am in the same boat like your's ! except my baby used to get up a couple of times. well, your baby's weight is ab. fine so he should sleep thru the night. when the baby cries try to pat him and sing some tunes to make him sleep. it might take some time but then he will figure it out. if he's sleepy this will calm him and he will go to sleep and if he's hungry which is probably not the case as we do feed them before the final retirement to bed so... he can hold his hunger till like 5-6 in the morning. but sleeping 5 hrs. is also a very good amt for him right now. u're lucky. i had to put mine in the other room and it's getting better. it's still going to be a long night for me. well, in your case - or in any case - full term or premature - from 6 mnths onward babies can sleep upto 6-7 hrs. at a stretch just have to be given a chance ! all the best ! and also remember there is no sure short formula for this - just try and try and u will succeed ! but consistency is the key ! with kids at least !
