Hi Hetal,
I have read most of your messages and noted your suggestions. Thank you and Hats off to your valuable and timely advice.
My dd is 26 months old and weighs around 24 pounds. She is active but eats very little. I changed my job to work part-time from 8:30am - 12:30pm but it's not helping her. I would like her to eat more and increase her nutrition. Please help
Her routine:
6:30-7:30am - raagi kanji or 5 oz milk/pediasure
9:15am @Daycare - snacks. I pack yoghurt, fruits. she hardly eats anything. she likes cheerios and eats little. what else can I offer?
11:30am @Daycare - Lunch. I pack pasta or idli or roti or veg/cheese. she doesn't eat anything.
12:40 - 1:30pm - @Home. I try to feed her roti or rice/veg. But she is tired after playing in daycare and is not interested in eating. She drinks 6-70z milk/pediasure
1:30 - 4:30pm - nap
5:00pm - apple juice/small pieces of dosa/very little toasted bread
7:00pm - Dinner. Rice and veg cooked with spices. she is hungry and will eat ok
8:30pm - flavored yoghurt/pudding
9:30pm - 6 oz milk. sleep.
- She has a bowel movement once a day but it's most towards eve and maybe if it's regular in the morning, she might feel hungry. But don't know how to regulate it.
- To increase her food intake, I feed her in the afternoon and night. Will it be better if she tries to eat on her own? Is this why she is unable to eat at daycare? I tried it a few times. she ate very little and got distracted and started playing.
- What nutritious snacks can I provide in the eve when she is hungry? Will this hamper her appetite during dinner
Thank you

Hetal replied. at 26mnths, 24lbs, is good only if your baby bw was : 2.9-3.4kgs,,if the bw is out of this range, say lower than 2.9kgs,thn her current wght is good,,if the bw is above 3.4kgs, thn i expect her to gain more wght !
since i m not told bw of your dd,i wouldnt be able to give you exact status,,but this is what i could calculate !
now about her schedule...
6:30-7:30am - raagi kanji or 5 oz milk/pediasure----no comments...
9:15am @Daycare - snacks. I pack yoghurt, fruits. she hardly eats anything. she likes cheerios and eats little. what else can I offer? ----
\\\you can make something like upma with lots of nuts(boiled & make sure she is not allergic to it, introduce one at a time, and wait/watch for 1 week), boiled sprouted moong cooked with some nuts(esp badam),some sprouted channa(with some garlic pwder),sometimes cracked wheat khchdi with wheat germ(pwder) and some fruits, if offerng in morning times,,or just a cheese toast/sandvich with some pieces of fruits and vegies ! make it colourful...it will attract her in her tiffin box.
11:30am @Daycare - Lunch. I pack pasta or idli or roti or veg/cheese. she doesn't eat anything./////////try cuttng roti in diff shapes, tiny stars or so,,and see if she likes it..get the pastas of diff attractive funny shapes,,you get these often in colourful medley,,add in vegies to it,,see if it makes her eat ! after a lil snack at 9/930, i will not expect her to by hungry at 11 itself ! mostly because in morning she had raagi, with pediasure and thn a lil snack she does eat,,which give a full meal !thats how she is not able to eat well lunch or after lunch when back at home...its good that she plays well !
12:40 - 1:30pm - @Home. I try to feed her roti or rice/veg. But she is tired after playing in daycare and is not interested in eating. She drinks 6-70z milk/pediasure.../////just as i said before...dont expect her to keep eating,,check her wght above !
if at all you skip her 1130 meal, i think she might be able to eat during 1240 meal time !! try it..see if it works that way.,but she is tired and wants to sleep so i dont expect her to accept the meal at that time either.....
can the daycare snack time be changed ? how about offering it at 1030,,thn she will eat properly and thn at home at 1240, she will eat nicely !! i dont know the norms at daycare so i cant say much,,who feeds her in daycare ? i was wondering if a light toast in moring with some cheese with pediasure and thn packing raagi kanji with some fruits in daycare,,helps her eat well !! see if it works that way !
5:00pm - apple juice/small pieces of dosa/very little toasted bread//add in cheese here, add in serving of yogurt here,if she does not take yogurt in the morning ! give her a serving of fruit juice OR yogurt and not both together !
7:00pm - Dinner. Rice and veg cooked with spices. she is hungry and will eat ok /// she is eating during this time,,mostly because after her snack time(morning), she did not eat well ! so obvious,,she is hungry, eats well.. offer her a serving of wheat/grain along with rice here...
8:30pm - flavored yoghurt/pudding///avoid giving yogurt here,,instead offer her chopped fruits/mostly mild fruits like mango, papaya, or banana with some strawberries,,sprinkle some sugar if she likes it that way..this the reason she miss morning bowels.i would rather want her to pass bowels in morning or atleast noons thn in evenings.
9:30pm - 6 oz milk. sleep.
--- offer her yogurt in first part of the day,,let it be her lunch time,,,see if she likes it that way...make sure she drinks water apart from her juice intakes,,upto 2-3glasses a day !
--- increasing her food intake will not make herr healthy,,also, whatever she is accepting, respect her apetite,,chck on what i talked about wght in first few lines...but yes, give her opportunity to eat herself,,it will be abit messy..and let it be during her snack time, thats during 5 evening,,,make sure that she eats herself in meals that are not imp for daytimes, like snacks and brunch,,because mostly kids avoid to eat well and want to play..so make sure that your presence makes them eat well atleast 3meals a day,,in your case !
---i will not expect her to eat in daycare mostly because kids like to play when they get together, and she goes to daycare with a good serving of raagi and pediasure ! which are both in itself a full meal so to say,,which makes her feel full and so not eat ! after 2years,,child likes to eat every 4-5hours,,like 3-4meals a day ! not more is required...
let her play in daycare,,and let her home visit be full of nutritious food !!!!
--- snacks ideas like i said before : lots of vegies cut in diff shapes, sizes, with diff colours, and varieties of foods alongwith it, like sprouts, chopped and cooked tofu with light homemade tomato sauce/gravy with spices(since she is able to eat), and some cheese chunks in it..
other nutritious snacks include wholegrain tortillas/breads,,and all finger foods,,check the ideas on finger foods :
avoid giving snack times before dinner,,she is eating dinner well,,let her continue doing that,,and instead add see if she accepts some soups after coming from daycare,,throw in some colourful vegies and pastas in it,,tell her to eat herself,,make a mess with herr,,see if she eats that way !!
if she is taking herr snack well, it means its affectng her lunch,,instead let her lunch be imp meals ! i hope you got the idea...thats what i see in your schedule...
let cheerios be the part of her soups and dals or even lunch,,if thats her favs,,,once she starts gettng used to those meals,,just remove cherrios !
let her be on 3 meals a day, like a good breakfast, a good lunch, some juice in evening(which is taking well),and a good dinner,,,
if you are offerng alternatives like dosa, offer cheese dosa or tofu dosa,,,its healthy,,throw in vegies with dosa and tell her to eat them !
your goal right now should be to offer her varieties in flavours, spices,,as she is eating all foods,,and whatever meals she eats,,dont disturb them,,just try to introduce the options in other meals which she skips ! because thats what is missing,,and keep her on 4hour schedule,,1 hour more or less will depend on how her apetite was able to accept that meal/light or heavy,,so respect that !
so i hope you got the idea as to what i mean to say...
also want to add, avoid offerng yogurt so many times in a day, only one serving is needed,,,,instead offer variety of juices during her post lunch snack !
rest all looks good,,no worries ! let her help herself in meals ! thats all i could make out...
