Feeding:how to feed ?

Hi
It is very difficult to feed my 7.5 months old daughter....
I used to make her lie down on my legs her head on my thigs and her legs on my legs( i will sit with my legs stretched outeards )Immediately she will turn and sit and in sitting she will never open her mouth.
How you all feeding in lying or sitting position?
Or should I buy high chair and try .Is that too early to make her sit in high chair or it is OK.
Please share your experience.

As Roopa and Preeti said, me too was feeding my son, the same way you did. But the kids wont ly down like that, once they starts sitting on their own. And as suggested, it is better to train them to eat while sitting in one place. Though it is not a correct habit, what I have done is to make him watch TV while feeding, so that actually most of the time he eats without knowingly. And toys also works if they are new and interesting. Keep some small interesting toys only for the feeding time. Good luck..!

Subject:  7m baby is too old to be fed like that

I hv 2 kids and i hv also taken care of my 2 sister's 2 kids (each)!

I hv fed them for long ... also in the position you hv mentioned.

A 7m old kid is quite old to be fed in that lying position. Once the baby can sit upright by himself, start feeding the baby with hands/spoon in sitting position.

But natural the baby will revolt to that position! For liquids, train the baby for a baby cup/baby glass. Give her a sipper. There are variety of training cups available in market.

In India, typically such babies are fed wile they play/crawl here and there. The mom runs after them.

I wd suggest get a high chair and start training the baby so that feeding time is not running around time for u.

Train the baby like this -

-Start with feeding the baby urself while she is sitting in the high chair.

-Keep some new toys especially for feeding time. Give them to her while feeding to keep her engaged and away from revolting this new position. (If the baby starts hating this, it will be very difficult to train her, so make the begining interesting for her). This way she wont get bored with the toys. U can use colorful cardboard boxes etc, packs (but NOT plastics) so that u dont hv to spend on new toys everytime. Put something into the boxes so that they make sound (I put baby's payal in it).

- talk to baby/sing songs/put on baby songs and sing with it while feeding the baby. U can dance too. ;-)

-once thats settled (i m assuming this will take some days to weeks), encourage the baby to eat by herself. Thats what they do in western countries - start training early. Let the baby spill, play, make things dirty... and try to eat. Whatever little amount goes into her mouth .. so far so good. Then Feed the baby yourself after a while, while baby in the chair itself.

- u get various types of feeding bowls and spoons in market. Some have vaccuum base so that they stick to the board and baby cant spill it. Some have partitiions so that u can keep things like khichdi+dahi, etc. Thus, if baby doesnt like one thing, it gets attracted to another and tries ot out.

So the takeaways -
* Stop that laying down position and feed while baby is upright
* Go ahead for high chair. Sooner the better.

cheers
Roopa

Subject:  Roopa,

i have been reading this site for past 6-8months and when i was reading your post in boards it made me remind Hetal replies.all tips and advices are exactly same.almost all of your tips are Hetal advices from old posts.

i appreciate your coming forward and helping. It is just that it made me remember hetal reply when my baby was in same troubles.i saw your posts asking hetal about your problems with other names and not with the name roopa.later on you said that replies were answers to your posts. so i noticed that and sharing my observation.

Mrs.balan what roopa told right now was once told by hetal to me. And it has worked for my elder son.
my younger son just started sitting, so now i am trying to get him sit in highchair and eat his meals.he will not stay in highchair for more than 10mins.
But, like hetal said in prev posts we mothers we have to keep trying and outsmart our kids. so i am still trying all these tricks with my younger son.
hope the tips will help you too.

Dear Mrs. Balan,

I used to feed my daughter the same way you are doing it. Sometimes she used to sit up half way thro her food. If your daughter has got control on her neck movements then u can try to make her sit on the high chair for sometime in the day. Try giving her, her favorite toy to play with and then try feeding her food on the high chair. Make her sit on the high chair for sometime everyday till she gets used to it. I hope thi swill help you.

Regards,
Preeti.
