Hello moms there,
I have twin 4 month old babies. They take bm + formula. During the last appointment, the ped said I can start them on rice cereal. She also suggested baby apple juice for my boy since he was having constipation. I have tried apple juice and he takes 1 oz + 1oz nursery water ok and his bowel movement has improved also.
I have heard different opinions on rice cereal and need suggestion. Is 4 months too early to start on them? I bought the gerber iron fortified one. I have heard that breast milk or formula feed exclusively is best for the first 6 months. Would they loose interest in milk once started on solids now? What are the plus and minuses of this? Also my babies were premature , born at 34 weeks and I would keep weight gain as my primary concern. The dr. says as long as they are going up on their weight it should be ok. Please advise on the rice cereal.

Hetal replied. let your dr decide when the babies are ready for the solids,,and thn let the babies decide :)
if babies are not ready for solids,,they will be highly upset with stomach probs and will not take food at all,,or will gag with solid feeds,,,thats y i said,,let the babies decide,,,
babies often dont lose interest in bm or formula until 9-10months,,infact most mothers struggle to offer solids until that time,,as babies like to drink formula or bm !!!! also, once the solids are started,,the intake of formula decreases to some level but still formula or bm feeds are their main food and not the secondary food..you will starting solids as a part of secondary food for them,,until they are 9-10months,,its lateron that you have to worry about solids being primary food and milk being secondary food for them....
its better to start solids after 6months considering lots of plus points ,,,
1.babies at 6months onwards often get a good solid transition and dont get the food allergies,,and their digestive system is mature enough to handle solid foodss,,
2. also their tongue reflexes as well stomach refluxes,,and because they get a smooth with the food,,which makes your life easy in majority of the cases to graduate them to diff textures without having probs of choking, constipation,,or ne such other probs,,however, this depends on babies individual muscle coordination and not only on the time they were introduced solids...
3.their interest in food is also more compared to babies who were started solids at 4months,,,because most often what happens,,at 6months onwards their body itself starts demanding other foods than just formula, milk or liquids,,they want to eat,,,and its then when food is offereed,,their acceptance to it is LIKELY to increase,,than you trying to feed thm,,,
however, this too dependss on baby prefernces and as to how his body feels the need of solids,,for the first month, you cant expect your baby to start accepting solids,,because its all new food for him,,...
4.last butnot the least,,the good thing to start at 6months onwards is by then most babies are able to sit well, and by then their gums are already ready to start teething,,which makes them open to various options to food,,like teething biscuits and such other foods that can be given only after the babies start to sit well or are able to lift themselves up from tummy,in crawling position and that their neck muscles are pretty strong,,,which makes your life easy by letting them sit in highchair and make them eat,,instead of holding your baby in hands and feeding them with spoon the solids..
when babies are able to sit unsupported or supported while feeding solids,,the choking hazards are less,,
thus down the line,,most babies were able to accept solids with better start when started at 6months onwards,,,
but however, in your case,,your dr has given you the choice to start with rice cereal,,so you have an option to do so....
it all dpendss on how the food is introduced,,wat time, and how babies accept it..if your baby weight is good, he is growing good, its not COMPULSRY that YOU HAVE to start on the solids right now...,,thn its advisable,,,
your dr told to start apple juice or boiled apple with skin because soon you are told to start rice cereal, which is iron fortified,,,and it is expected to give mild constipation,,,and in your case, prev your baby was constipated,,because of formula and because after 3-4months,,most babies feel the need of extra fluids other than bm or formula,,,which is what just happend in your case,,
so good goin,,do as your dr tells you to follow,,rice cereal is a good start,,but if i were you,,i would like to start solids at 6months,,and until thn formula, juices or bm....unless otherwise, my babies weight was underweight,,only as declared by dr..and i will not mind asking specifically to my dr \" do i really need to start solids right now,,as per their wghts \" ...its then my dr will answer, yes or no ! instead of giving me an option to start solids....thats just what i did at my baby well child check up,and later on i streched bm,bf upto 7.5months ! she was fine by weight,,so you and your dr be the best judge,,
also to add finally,,,were your baby born prematurely or were just preterm !
many babies were born preterm at 34 weeks so m asking,,if at all your baby was preterm,,thn it means that they were perfectly fine with their body functions and didnt need ne extra lift from nursery after and all their breathing functions, were good enough...
if at all your baby was premature,as declared by your dr and your baby was in need of er care/nursery care,,with monitoring of their health and all,,thn its quite possible that baby weight will concern not only you but also your dr...so in that case, its advisable to do what your dr tells you to do..he knows your babies from day 1,,and he sees it clearly what your baby needs,,,
so you decide,,you are the mom !!
take care, you have wonderful time with 2 lil bundles of joy..
