Parenting Teens:Teens and their First Cell Phone

Do you think that your teen uses his cell phone responsibly? Are cell phones a boon or bane for teenagers? Does a cell phone help a teen in socialising or is it an impediment? What methods do you use to prevent abuse?

I think if not necessary cellphone is not given to the kids. Many other things on cellphones can affect kids discipline. Their studies can be affected as they will spend more time playing games and chating on phone. I always say my son if in problem ask your school or tution teacher to call and inform parents.

Nowadays, a cell phone is nothing but a status symbol. Everyone is focussed on the features added instead of the actual phone.

Thanks for this nice and informative article. I actually have to purchase 2 mobiles, for me and my daughter. I was going to get her the mobile later but after reading this article, and also the above message, I feel she should have her mobile first.

What use do teens have of cell phones? All useless nonsense. Can they not use the PCO, there are still so many of them. This device is nothing but an additional wasteful cost, to the parents. Like voting there should be a law stating an age for one to become qualified to possess a cell phone, whether or not you can afford it.

I agree with you. Teenagers should not be given cell phones unless absolutely necessary. PCOs are good enough. I don´ t buy this idea of ´ what if something happens?´ Remember that cell phone networks are the first to shut down.

I agree with Somdutta. Though I find it quite unnecessary an expense at times it comes very handy. During some mishaps like blasts and all, where will you go searching for PCOs? Best to have a mobile and call up your family before the networks are down.

Now now, let´ s not get too excited about this. That is an extreme and rash step that you are demanding. Not at all in keeping with the matter at hand. In a democracy its upto the people, including teens, to decide whether or not to keep cell phones, not you and I.
