Feeding:Hi Hetal (concerned!!)

Name: mother

Hi Hetal
My baby is 11 weeks old. She will be completing 3 months on 10th of this month. I am really concerned about her weight. Her weight is 6.36 kg (with diapers n clothes and her birth weight was 3.3 kg. Do you think she is overweight or she is gaining too much of weight. For past few weeks she was gaining 200 gms per week and this week she gained 150gms. Reason I am concerned is because both me and my husband has tendency to put on. And I had GD (very high insulin)my doc has told that i need to make sure she is not overweight. She is not taking too much off milk also. She is taking around 5 feeds in 24 hrs. She doesnt take more than 120 ml. Sometimes only 80 and if she takes 120 then she throws out 10 or 20. I know i am not overfeeding her and dont think i should be reducing her feeds. Do you think she is overweight or its just her growth as her length was 50 cm and my husband is quite tall and well build. She doesnt look plump atall but her head is heavy. Does baby put on fast in initial months and then they put on slowly. Please guide me
Thanks
she is taking expressed breast milk and 1 formula feed

hi there,
with birth weight of 3.3kgs, and current weight of 6.00kgs(removing diapers and clothes), her weight should range is expected to be around 5.7 to 6.5..so accordingly her current weight just the right,,she is not overweight.
well, putting on weight does depend on family history, but you have to understand that it also depends alot on baby own growing capacity and whether or not he will become just like his parents.
when gd develops during pregnancy, its often coz of placenta that produces hormones that cause insulin resistance..this raises blood sugar levels in both mother, and the fetus..

the infants born in this complication, are often born with high birth weight and their birth weight cannot be considered as 100% healthy birth weight.also studies have shown that these infants are more likely to develop diabetes when adult !! howevver, there is no specific evidence regarding weight of the baby in longer run due this complication.

But, what your dr said is that there is a risk that your baby might become large or fat baby !

but there are other risk involved as well ,,i want you to take care of not only weight but also low calcium in blood,ne signs of jaundice, low blood sugar as to when your baby seems to be tired with minimal playtime allowed,,and yes a big risk is obesity.
so be careful regarding that.
now abt her feeds, 5feeds in 24hrs,of 120 ml, that is she is taking around 4oz per feed,,which means 4x5=20oz in a day, at 3months.
and a healthy baby from 3to4months,,is expected to take approx 20oz-42oz,,42oz is the case when he becomes 4months ! since your baby is taking 20 oz and around,,m not worried...
but considering that both parents having tendency to put on weight,,which is not reflected as of now !!
however, it might reflect in future,,so keep going at this rate,,she is fine !

throwing out 10-20ml is not counted, its often because of overfeeding,,as babies drink to the limit that it makes them sleep,,since their digestive system is not mature enough to handle that much of feeds at a time,,he will throw up ! also, its not always that we are hungry at the same rate and we eat everyday same number of pieces of bread !! so understand that babies too are human.

dont reduce her feeds as of now, she is going good ! 3months is not the right age where you can predict your baby good height..its dpends on parents, and not only your husband but you or some suprssed genes from ne one in your family history !! could be neone in your entire family tree !!!

head is heavy until 4-5months,,it will look heavy until their neck muscles look stronger,,which often happens when they start lifting their head on their own..and start to crawl..the right time to judge whether head is big or heavy is after they start crawling !
and yes baby put on fast at initial months,,thats how we check their weight on weekly basis and then after 6months, some countries go monthly,, and then once they cross 9-12months,,they are often called toddlers and that time onwards its either half yearly or yearly..
and it is at that time you will actually see her height, head measurements and weight,,,,if not 9months it depends on when the baby starts cruising around,,its only after that, his body gets well toned and his body is able to burn his own fat,,and his muscle tone develops,,and fat reduces...

rightnow there is nothing to worry, unless your baby shows other complications and lack of responsiveness or her sensitivity is lost..play with her, give her a really good day with lots of play time and tummy time,,now that she is 3months she is ready for it,,since you already have this risk coming ahead of you,,if you want to pass off this risk, try your best :
to give your baby day full of activities, make sure he doesnt get overtired though, and once you are told to start solids,at your dr recommendations, avoid foods with extra fat,,give your baby a simple diet, with natural fats and no added fat...
and after meals, directly dont let him sleep, keep him upright and play with him for a while and then let him sleep...right now its ok.
bm plays an important role in taking care of baby weight so as long as you can express and maintain your milksupply,,its good for your baby !

remember that,,atleast for 6months,,i wouldnt mind if your baby takes some 3-4oz extra bm than a formula feed of 2-3oz even !!
also, i would like to add that babies primary diet has to be bm as long as possible and if not able to give bm, then and then only formula,,but it doesnt mean that you have to reduce her feeds..3months onwards, feeds are on demand,,and your baby is taking just the right amt as expected acc to her age(not considering her birthweight)...so i feel ok with that.

just dont overfeed,,thats all, per feed, notmore than 4oz..nevermind if she takes abit less, babies do that,,its perfectly fine for ne normal babies to sometimees skip or take less feeds,,esp from 3months onwards,,expect that..its normal..even if she goes a lil above 120ml, i m fine,..give her a good playtime, then !

also remember when you start giving her formula totally or when majority of her feeds is on formula,,,expect her weight to shoot up,,as formula is heavy and has milk solids in it..in case of ne such concerns that may happen,,, always ask your dr if ne other type or brand of formula will work better for you..only if you see a sudden shootup in her weight by weekly..otherwise not...
as of now, she looks good to me,,and i am not worried..but i would advice to keep a close eye on her intake, weight nd milestones....

you take care, and dont worry,,in these cases, we as mothers have to try our 100% to the best,,after that,,,leave some 60% to god..he has created your baby life,,he will take care of it !! the rest 40%, your dr will take care of him,,just trust them !
a very good luck to you.
