Feeding:Request for Hetal - Improving food intake

Hi Hetal,
Read some of your posts and found it helpful. I hope you can guide me with improving my daughter's diet and nutrition intake.

My daughter is 23 months old, weighs around 22 pounds and 34 inches tall. Her birth weight was only 5 pounds though she was born full-term and I had no complications during pregnancy. She is active and reached all her milestones on time.

I am giving her pediasure since she turned one. Her schedule is something like this:

Early morning: 4 - 5oz Pediasure
Breakfast: small bites of cheerios/corn flakes

Lunch: Pasta/Idlis/dosa/Potatoes, cheese, banana, flavored yoghurt (I offer her these. she eats in small quantities)
6 - 7oz Pediasure

Dinner: Rice,dhal with vegetables
6-7oz pediasure

I know that her solid intake is less and need to reduce amt of pediasure but am afraid that she might become thinner. Tried boiled eggs but she didn't like it. She eats dosas, other veg but all in very small quantities. She wants to eat on her own and doesn't like when I feed her. However, after eating a few bites on her own, she loses interest and goes around playing. She doesn't show interest in biscuits, cheetos etc..

Could you please provide some suggestions on how to increase her appetite and food intake.

Thanks for your time and inputs,
Nidhi

sry about late reply,
acc to the birthweight mentioned, your 23month old should be at around 22lbs ,,,which is jst the right weight.

have your tried giving her whole milk ? was pediasure recommended by dr ? pediasure generally is recommended by dr to those kids who dont get enough nutrition..its only with advice of dr thats its advisable to give,,thats y i asked.

Early morning: 4 - 5oz Pediasure -- no comments...

Breakfast: small bites of cheerios/corn flakes,,,go for toddler cereals(iron fortified with whole milk or pediasure)around 1/4th cup to 3/4th cup of iron fortified cereal is expected.if needed reduce pediasure to 5oz.

add in brunch : 1/4thcup serving of fruit/pref apple or banana or neother fruit.

Lunch: Pasta/Idlis/dosa/Potatoes, cheese, banana, flavored yoghurt (I offer her these. she eats in small quantities) --- give more vegetables, more varieties,,where is wheat,,at 23months old,its advisable to give atleast one serving of grain..

6 - 7oz Pediasure -- thats ok...reduce to 5oz.

evening snack - add in 100% juice,,with some toddler crackers, or some bites of whole grain/multigrain biscuits.

Dinner: Rice, dhal with vegetables -- no comments,,,,give watever she missed whole day..

6-7oz pediasure,,if needed, give upto 5oz of pediasure...

everything looks ok to me,,have done the additions,,also add in extra sources of protein like lentils,tofu,meats(lean)..if she doesnt like eating boiled eggs, try offering her omelette(one egg),,at 23months you can definately give that.
give this as a great morning brunch !

add in proteins to her diet,,if she wnts to eat herself, give her foods that she can pick and make it abit on sauce side,,never mind about the mess ! sauces make foods tender and babies above 1 year, like it.your baby is just right by weight, so m not worried but if you still want her apetite to increase,,,offer her soups preferably with lunch or half n hour before lunch,,this will clear her bowels she will really hungry..offer some 1/4th cup of soup..make this as a brunch and replace the fruit serving,,you can addin the fruit serving in that case along with juice in the late afternoon snack..also,,would like you to introduce her to mild spices,,she is almost 2 years and that she is expected to accept mild spices..our indian mild spices and some italian spices have herbal qualities that improve apetite thereby increasing food intake..all mildspices are tumeric, cumin corainderpwder, tadka of curry leaves, hing or crushed jeera,,a lil ginger from 20months onwards is good start to hot spices..just a lil sprikle of its pwder,,,italian seasonings, oregano, basil in pastas sauces are great to increase apetite.

hope this helps.
