Problems in School:School Phobia
2006-04-23
Name: am

My 5 year old is scared of going to school. He weeps at the school gate everyday. This is his forth year of schooling (2 years pre school and 1 year at Nursery) and he has never before done this. He is a gentle and shy person and has not told me what is bothering him, the new class teacher could be a possibility. He has made me promise I will not tell his class teacher that he cries on reaching school. I want him to have a positive experience in school and this is worrying me. The surprising thing is that once school finishes he is happy and says he enjoyed school.

Dear am,
Probably your son suffers from separation anxiety. He also does not want the teacher to know that he cries, it means that he is embarassed about it but has made it a habit. What if u try and ask your husband to drop him to school ? Or better still he can go in the school van itself so that he sees other kids happily going to school ? Meanwhile u can tell him, See beta today Mummy is not feeling well, so Papa will drop u or today u can go in the van . U will have to slowly do it but avoid all discussions about his crying at the gate. Try it out.....
