Problems in School:Shy child

My daughter is 5 yrs old. She is very shy. She will not greet anyone unless i force her to do so. She is very good at drawing. So I asked her to participate her in drawing competition. At home she prepared well for that. But I do not know what happened to her at venue. The moment we reached, she started crying & said she does not want to participate. I tried a lot to convience but failed. She was the only one who was crying at the venue. I do not understand what to do and how to handle her. So next time she will not behave in same way. Otherwise she is very brillient child. Pl can anyone help me? Does some kids behave in the same manner the way daughter has reacted?

First of all, there is nothing wrong with your daughter. She is a bright child but from what I gather she is a little insecure and conscious. Tell me does she go out and play on her own ? with other kids or does she always need u to be with her ? If so, then slowly but surely u will have to let her be independent. For eg. if u r taking a bath and the phone rings, does she pick it up and answer the person ? If not so, then steadily train her . Do u encourage her to help u in the kitchen do a fun recipe like bake a cake or make a toast or something ? With your supervision she can do things on her own. Also never ever forget to whole heartely appreciate her and reward her for her even small achievements once she does things on her own. This way she will develop confidence. I was the same when i was young and was v. self-conscious of my image etc. But when I started to do things on my own I shed off my shyness and introvertness and today I have become a v. outgoing and initiative taking personality. So all the best, it will take time but u will surely solve the problem.
