Dear Hetal,
My son will complete 7mnths in another week, i do give him a regular feed of two small elachi bananas and half medium sized cooked apple, and then about 4oz of milk (4-5 feeds), during the day one serving of ceralac wheat apple, another serving of farex wheat vegetable and one serving of nestum rice ragi(allthree just 2-3spoons)... is this sufficent at this age, but for the past two days i made for him at home a mixture of two parts of ragi powder(nachni), one part of rice powder, half part of mung dal powder and little less than one fourth part of urud dal powder, boiled it with some hing and little sugar... Is this diet good for his weight gain, he is having it with good interest but I feel that since he is having this, he is having gas problems and he feels drowsy and sleeps a bit more but he is having a running nose too.....so Dear Hetel is the diet intorduced giving him problems or may be it is coz of cold only...Plz advice...one more thing...does giving one spoon of grape water everyday keep him away from problems of indigestion and gas problems too???Thanks a Lot!!

Hetal replied. dear, what is wheat doing at 7months diet ! wheat is supposed to be introduced atleast after 9months,not before,,before that its heavy and its no wonder why he is having indigestion or gas problem ! atleast and at the least wait until 9months,,best is wait until 1year to start any wheat products/cereals..
and wat is urad dal doing again ! its the heaviest of all dals, even a tiny lil amount is very gassy....avoid that, right now,,give later after 9months.
and in that raagi, wheat and urad dal,,all are heavy to digest..reduce the amt of raagi in his diet,,c his reaction...
rest all looking ok to me.rice with raagi is good combo and easy in digestion as its not only raagi.and no concerns about watever fruits and vegetables in diet..increase fruits and vegies in diet right now, instead of flours, dals esp toor dal and urad dal or mixed cereals containing wheat.
so here is what all i could figure out !
also, if all is normal and baby is on regular normal diet, as per his age, then cold might be the cause of constipation, but please note that constipation is not bothersome, baby might get gassy, in some cases..it depends on baby reactions.
gripe water is good to give, no problems, give once a day or once in 2 days or once in 1week,,i would say try reducing the amt of diet or go for lighter diet than giving your baby anything that helps him in digestion.
your baby is maturing right now and let his digestion be mature enough to handle the food he is eating, instead of getting a helping hand from gripe water or anything like that...even though its harmless why make your baby get something extra when theere are better alternatives available. after all its a medicine, and you never know when its goin to make your baby get habituated to it,,so never do that..
per meal - go light, go healthy/lots of fruits, vegies,,but go less in amount and if your baby seems to be hungry after all you gave, add-in one more meal of same little amt..
and increase his playtime,,let him learn to digest his own food by doing good exercise or playing well for a good health.
drowsiness, laziness, bloaty, gassy, is all the prob because of improper digestion or constipation.
about runny nose, if its full of mucus,he is having cold, try giving tylnol(if in US/or any infant over the counter regular acetaminophen medicine if at all your dr has intially asked you to do so),give it once and see if it clears,if it clears and he is fine,it must be just because of some dust allergy that can be easily cured..
and he doesnt need any immediate dr attention, or else talk to your dr about it ! a normal runny nose is a sign of allergy, cold, flu or any viral infection or even ear infection, and in some cases also has been a sign of teething, so check his gums colour(reddish,pinkish,swollen),,..remember its one of the sign and not the only sign so please dont get panicky.,,these are possibilities of ruuny nose, please note. dont panic :)
no worries otherwise.
good luck
