Feeding:Making baby have medicines

Hi ,

My son is 14 mos old and unfortunately this weekend , he got fever and cold . My questions is reg something I know a lot of moms would like to know how to handle.

What do most of you do to make your babies have the medcines prescribed for them ? Mine has calpol without a fuss. But some other medicnes like mucolite or oflomac ( which have a bitter aftertaste ) are so difficult to give. I generally cheat by giving a little sweet liquid first ( grape juice ) followed by the medicines mixed with the juice. But he still throws it all up . And when they're unwell , as it is , they eat lesser so it's really painful to see him throw up. So what do all of you do ????

Thanks. I hope everyone posts their messages.

agree with aarti..above 1 year,no probs giving honey and great way,,babies love honey.
avoid giving any juicy fruits when it comes to bitter taste medicines,,instead try fruits like banana,,
simple as that, with bitter taste medicines, try with sweet but natural stuffs,,and try using the medicine injector thats just like injection without needle and you can give lil push to babies inner side cheek and baby will drink it faster...as its a gush..and also avoids decolouring of teeth which is seen in some medicine..
if its thicker, make it thin by putting it in the whole feed of juice(preferably apply or banana juice),,let it go diluted but it will go in the stomach instead of throwups.
thats all i did so far for my 1year.
good luck.

Hi Minka,

I struggled quite a bit with my son's meds in Madras. The throw up occurs due to the bad taste and also the thickness. This is what worked after several trials. This is assuming that the medicine is not oil based.

I would dilute the med in water and mix it with honey/sugar syrup. Since he is 14 mos plus it should be ok to give a little honey. Instead of giving all of it at a single sitting, I spread it over an hour's time. I figured it was better than have him throw up the entire thing. It will seem like you are spending the whole day dispensing meds!

If it is oil based (like some antibiotics), I mixed it directly with honey and gave it with my finger little by little. That was hard.

Another tip: When you give the med in the mouth, direct it towards the innder cheek on the side. It lessens the gag reflex.

Hope this helps somewhat. Hope he feels better soon.
