Hello:
We'll be celebrating our son's First Birthday in two weeks, or to be exact, on the Janmashtami day. We are from Kerala. My husband does not want to have a 'cake and cake-cutting ceremony' at the Party. He wants to replace it with an Indian custom or something with an Indian theme that catches the attention of everyone. We are in the USA. Does anyone have any ideas on this? And, where can we get the materials needed for the custom, if any. I sincerely appreciate any help.

since u are from kerala u can keep the party kerala based. u can get some older kids to dress up as people from differnt parts of kerala, have a story telling session with props abt onam or vishu..or u can tell the story of mahabali. try and get some girls to do a small dance on kerala..nothing fancy they can just jump around to a fisherman song. keep the menu keralaish payasam and the works. instead of cutting a cake u can bring out a lamp and light it. put kolams around it if possible. and try and decorate the place with indian stuff like mango leaves made of chart, jasmine thoranams .
