I have moved to the UAE from Bangalore recently. My son knows only his mother tongue. We ocassionally speak to him in English. Could the language be the reason why he dislikes his school here and also the place ? Is it too late to start teaching him a new language ? He is 3 years.

The same story! My son is facing as we moved B'lore to Mumbai. And we are teaching him Hindi & English both at a time, while he continues to speak mother tongue at home. The result is encouraging as far as learning l'uges, but still long way for going to school. He resists going to school still. I remember some where having read that children can and great in picking languages! Please share if any improvements in your child now!

Dear Shreya,
Don't expect so much from a 3 yr old child. Give him some time to get adjusted to the new environment. And more important than anything else is that don't give him an inferiority complex that he cannot speak english. There is nothing wrong about him not liking the new environment. Have you liked the new environment? (there is a differnece between liking and accepting).
Be patient. Have faith in your child.

HI! According to me, any child takes time to adjust to a new environment, it is sometimes even hard for an adult to adjust when it comes to shifting to a new locality, so then the child suffering from a strong dislike to a new place is justified. I think you should decide on one language and stick to it.. tryin to speak in different languages may be very confusing for ur child. So give him sometime to adjust and once he a little adapted to the place..he will just be perfect!!

Saz, thank u too. Well, we just put him on to English, hoping he'll be able to communicate with the kids at school and make some new friends. However, we continue to speak in his mother tongue. Thanx again.

RE:Shyness right or wrong?
According to me you should take your child to a counselor and ask her what is the exact problem as this is not common and you should get into it as soon as possible and understand the real reason behind the same, please do not ignore this its a request.... - Anaida [View Message]
RE:Shyness right or wrong?
Hello dear this is really nothing to worry as its very common and you should not take this matter as a big concern as kids at this age are normally shy and they do not like meeting new people infact they want only their friends and all with them.... - Anita [View Message]
