Ragi is very healthy diet for kids. I have a home made receipe with ragi along with other pulses. Is very rich in fibre, protiens, carbohydrates, iron, calcium. Also kids like this.
this is easy for the moms who stay in India. but find all the ingredients in indian stores.
Ingredients;

section 1;
1.moong dal
2.ragi
3.wheat
4.barley

All in equal quantites. soak all the pulses separatly dry in shadow and fry them till brown in low flame.

section2:

1.saagu
2.badaam
3.fried gram
all in eqal quantities
as sec1
fry 1 & 2.

Now grid all the ingredients in sec 1 &sec 2 to coarse powder. just like semolina.

This is certainly a long process, but you can store it for 3 to 4 months once made and can give as breakfast or at snack time or even as lunch for younger kids.

cook the powder in water (it takes a couple of min) , add milk and jaggery (jaggery is best as it is rich in iron) ofcourse u can use sugar.
This tastes just like kheer.

Just a day work but can use every day for 3 months.

hope this helps you

this is a traditional food which we give to babies from 6/7 mon.

Hi Ekta,

If you are an Indian living abroad, please walk in to an indian store and ask them for Ragi. They will have it. If not any provosion store in India would have it. It looks like mustard seeds except that it is brown in color.

Well it's best if you can preparing it yourself instead of getting the readymade Ragi Flour.

Get Ragi which is avalilable in the market. Soak it overnight and then grind it to a fine paste. Sieve this so that you get a fine paste. Let this settle down. Once it does drain off the water which you get on the top.

Then to prepare the porridge, take this mixture, add sufficient water, a bit of formula milk powder and for sweetness add sugar or jaggery or kalkandam. Keep in the fire and keep stiring till this mixture thickens. If it thickens too much then loosen it by adding a bit of hot water. Cool it and then feed your baby.

Remember always prepare the porridge fresh.

Happy feeding.....
