Feeding:Biting lower lip - should I use a pacifier ?

Hi

My son - 6.5 months - is constantly chewing his lower lip so much that his lower lip and chin area has small red spots . How do I stop him from doing this ? Is it OK to apply some bitter thing like karela or something ? Or should I use a pacifier to make sure he has something to suck or bite ? I have tried teether but he's not interested for very long - I guess he doesn't want to hold it for so long.

Help ! Are there any disadvantages to using a pacifier - shape of mouth or teeth getting affected or it becoming a habit ?

Do you think he is teething? IMO, you might unnecessarily introduce a dependence on pacifier by giving him one now. If it is teething you can try giving him a small turkish cloth which is placed in the fridge. It is soothing. I have a feeling the lip biting is one of those habits which will go away.

My ped asked not to use a pacifier after month 3. I see even two year olds on a pacifier in the US. I think it is just parents who want to quiet their kids when they are shopping!

Hi Aarti,

I absolutely hate the pacifier. I think of it as a plug to stop babies from crying and hate seeing children with it in their mouth.

And lucky me, my son hates it too - he spat it out the first time we tried. the reason why we tried it is that his lip biting is so bad he's got small red blisters on his chin . I apply some cocnut oil to heal it.

We are now trying other remedies - like applying a paste of haldi so that he tastes it an decides not to bite. Final try will be karela juice !!!!
