Feeding:Eating her hand

Name: Mumukshu Mohanty

My three-month old daughter has developed this new and very compulsive habit of licking and chewing at her fist. She almost puts her balled up fist into her mouth or sticks her tongue out and continuously licks her hand. She is also chewing at cloth that comes anywhere near her mouth. Why is she doing this and how can I stop her? I am afraid of all the germs she must be injesting in the process.

HiMumukshu,
My 3 mth boy does the exact same things (fist in mouth, sucking any cloth, toy etc etc that comes his way).
Dont get too concerned abt the germs! Unless ur girl has put her hand somewhere that is exceptionally prone to germs like when you step outside ur home or in her poop while diapering her.
I guess once the kids start crawling u cant be behind them to check every minute of the day right!
cheers,
August Mom

Thanks Sonu & August Mom for your advice. I guess I just can't stop my baby from putting her hand in her mouth. However, I have noticed that if I keep her distracted enough with a favourite toy, the hand stays out of the mouth. I mentioned this problem to the pediatrician and she asked me to say a firm "No" to the child when she puts in her hand. Pediatrician thinks it will work.
Thanks anyway for your support.
