Trying since long:To Archie

Hi Archie,
I have a question to you.My husband's sperm motility is low and also it is abnormally shaped and the count is 32M/ml.Is there any treatment for the above to improve the chances? He is turning 39 Is it because of the age?Secondly the Doc whom i visited gave me two options 1.to take the superovulation therapy and trying the natural way (my results with the 3rddayUS were really good and the blood test results came normal except for the prolactin level being slightly elevated).
Now my question is When I am on the Superovulation how far is my egg hostile to the sperm which has a lowmotility/abnormalshapes
when iam already ovulating and everything is fine with me?and if I go for an IUI which iam planning to do so in the coming months what are the chances of conception with this sperm morphology? I am eagerly waiting for your reply.Thankyou for helping me in this regard.

Dear Archie,

I am extremely sorry for the confusion. I was only citing our case to aid the conversation. You are speaking to Lucky only. I cited our case as Doctors in Scandinavia deny that any help can occur due to the intervention of a Urologist.
And I was interested in any general opinion that a urologist could help.
Sorry again Archie. Please go on with
Lucky....

Warm Regards,
Nambikkai

nambikkai,
do not be sorry. I was only confused and put it right there.
I don't think Urologist intervention would affect fertility.
It depends on what type of help Urologist is making to and what is the purpose behind. If you tell fact urologist in itself would tell you if the procedure has future with fertility or not.

I think varicocele surgery is uncertain with fertility complex. But Lucky's case is way different from fertility. She is mother of child and no need for her to worry on this aspect.
What an Urologist would do is to give exact percentage of quality of sperms and motility as well and improve on that matter.
You must know there is Ayurvedic treatment that has shown to improve sperm count.
I am like your Drs. who deny to buy anything said on internet. I don't like products that I can't reach to question if I have to!

dear lucky,
rarely I get concerns coming from real medical trouble and not due to emotional outbreak. your's for sure is medical problem and would have to be addressed in same manner.
I am against both, superovulating agent treatment to you or IUI. It's because the real problem of failure lies in your spouse side and not yours. Although you did not mention about your cycles and ovulation status I think it's sufficient for me to know that his sperms are of abnormal shape and are slow motile. These are two major problems and unless they are fixed I would not recommend your to go for Clomid or stuff like that to superovulate, neither I recommend IUI.

His sperm count is not bad but motility and quality of sperm is bad that's as good as worse sperm count.

It would totally be luck if you get pregnant with either superovulation or IUI. I know some of them right on this board got pregnant with low sperm count and by natural method, where we helped playing on timings.

I could help you timing given that you tell about your cycles a little bit, regularity and length.

IUI and clomid are both expensive and I would hold before getting your spouse treated.

He needs to be seen by a professional Urologist who would guide him treatment on improving motility and may to some extent getting sperms in shape.

No, the shape and motility both factors can't be attributed to his age, he is just 39, could be but not a major factor at this moment.

Get him to Urologist and bring exact percentage of bad shaped sperms and motility as well.

I am thoroughly confused with two persons responding to my answer.
A Lucky and Nambikkai and appears that they are having different issues.
Lucky goes on explaining about her cycle and semen analysis done by urologist while last round of her pregnancy.
while nambikkai without giving any details on her problem speaks about varicocele issue. I am speaking to two people or one person.
Unless clarified I would not go ahead.

Thankyou Archie. My cycle is 28-30days.It is rarely Irregular.Actually I already tried Clomid50mg+OPK given by my gynae last yr for 6mos.No success.I have a son(5yrsold) and i am trying to conceive for the second time. Its almost 2yrs now.I have been asking the same ques.whether my husband has to consult a Urologist but my Gyn and this Fertility doc say that is not necessary.I'm not able to understand WHY?Few months before when I conceived with my son,my husband had to consult the urologist. All the tests were normal but still at that time i am not sure why that he was precribed clomid for 3mos.and then after few months i conceived naturally. Now this time I mentioned the same to the fertility Doc.but he said there is no cause/treatment and even if clomid was given to men it yeilds only 5-10% of improvement. That's what puzzles me!Anyway I will get an Appt. with his Urologist and then get in detail.Thank you.Archie.I will get back to you once I know what the Urologist got to say!.

Subject:  Why a urologist Archie?

Dear Archie,
We live in Scandinavia and here we were told that there exists no treatment for a low sperm count. While they mentioned that Varicocele could be a reason , and suggested a urologist could treat the same thru surgery. The odds of success thru surgery was very low and was not a recommended option.
Archie .. is this what you meant too or is there some other benefit in consulting a urologist. Please let me know.
Hence here they first try IUI with superovulation( which is cheaper than IVF) . Then move on to IVF or IVF ICSI.
I hear about a lot of medicines for low male sperm count and motility in the Net. When asked the Doc here says that they are not reliable.
If you have any further info on this Please share
