Feeding:Rice variety

Hi,

My daughter is 10 months old and while giving solids I give her cereals in the morning and evening.I give her cooked and blended(she has reflux) basmati rice along with carrots for lunch.I want to know if any other rice variety can be softly cooked so that I don't have to blend the same.If she comes across a single grainy stuff, she'll throw out the entire meal.Right now, for a teaspoon of rice, I mix around 130 ml water and pressure cook for 5 whistles and blend the cooked rice in a blender.

Your questions:

\";Can u tell me how many whistles shud I keep because I pressure cook the rice for my daughter.\";

I think I went upto 5-6 whistles. You might have to experiment with the number of whistles and rice-water combination to get the right consistency.

\";When did ur son overcome this problem...and how did u solve this..Please explain.Thanks in advance. \";

Only now at two! I had to take it very slow. I stopped comparing him to other kids who could eat textured food much earlier than him. As long as he was willing to try new foods I did not push him. He could eat new foods (eg. omelette, sandwiches) like adults but still wanted his old foods like rice to be soft. Sometimes he would gag just looking at textured food, even before it reached the mouth!

It was nothing specific which I did, he started eating texture when he was ready. Now he prefers dry rice and has started eating some raw veges. But I have to still make sure it is cut into small pieces.

I am very happy that my pediatrician did not put unnecessary fears of reflux. I suggest that you be very patient since your daughter is only 10 months old. She might not even take as long as my son.

Good luck.

Do you stay in the US? If so, Jasmine rice (available in Indian stores or Farmer's markets) from Thailand is softer than Basmati. You can try 1 spoon rice:3 spoons water as a start.

Or, you could put uncooked rice in a blender and make it like rice rava. If you cook that it will be easier to mash.

I remember blending even the soft rice varieties when my son was 10 months old. He just did not want any texture! But he loved new tastes. He would gag on new textures. The ped asked me not to worry about it. She called it \";texturally sensitive\";. I am glad she didn't make me worry, because now at 2 yrs he prefers hard cooked and dry rice!

Good luck. I know it can be frustrating when we have to blend everything. That stages passes by fast.
