Sleeping:Sleep position

Hi,

I have a 3month old son. When he was about 1 month old he had a gas problem. So the doctor
advised that we make him sleep on his stomach to pass the gas. Moreover, he used to startle easily in his sleep and wake up. So since then we make him sleep on his stomach and found that he was comfortable.
Recently, i read somewhere that making a baby sleep on his stomach can lead to suffocation. Is this true?
I tried making my baby sleep on the side or back but he feels uncomfortable and startles and wakes up.
I am confused.
Let me know if u guys have any idea abt this.

Thanks
Sangeetha

Hi Sangeeta,
My son too is 3mts old and he too had some gas problems, but I have checked with 2-3 doctors and they strongly advice against sleeping on the stomach due to SIDS, which is more common to babies sleeping on the stomach. A couple of baby books also advice against it. So I let my son sleep on his back or on his right side only.

For a couple of days his sleep may be abrupt, but a baby needs his sleep and soon he will adjust to sleeping on his back.

Try not to let him sleep on his stomach on the bed or any soft surface, where chances of smothering are more possible.

Take care,
Priya

hi,

i agree with hetal. better to sleep on the back, but if u r advised to do so, dont worry. also, he is now 3 months and he know to breathe (this is the main concern for newborns) soon, when he starts to roll, he will sleep on his stomach only. so dont worry.

love to ur kid,
jayashree

Additionally, I am applying the ointment recommended by her doctor for the rashes. RE:How to Develop a Sleep Routine for your Newborn
According to me this is good but then you cannot force your child to sleep as per your wish as kids as really bad in this and they have a tendency to sleep in day and get up in late night so according to me this is not the key to success, please post if i am wrong.... - Anita [View Message]
