Trying since long:Discharge from breast/Prolactin levels

Hi everyone!

I have a history of irregular periods (mennorhagia)from last 18 yrs since I started menstruating (I am 30 now) and from last abt 9 years, I have some water like discharge from my left breast which only comes out by squeezing. It started with both breats, but the discharge stopped from the right breast few months after it started. It started with reddish discharge and within 1-2 months the reddishness was gone and since then its only watery..which is mildly sticky! I got a test done about 2 years back to check for cancerous cells, but it came out negative.
My present OB/Gynae asked me to check the prolactin level and the level was very much within the limits!..though she still asked me to take bromocriptine tablets...2.5 mg and now the dosage has been increased to 5 mg per day.
My doctor told me that she has advised this medicine because of the symptom I have...although the test results dont say anything!..But I am quite tense these days, as this medicine hasnt helped at all to stop the discharge.

Anybody else in the same boat? Please share yr experiences.

Regards
Minnie

Hi minnie

i am in the same boat. I delivered a boy baby and stopped breast feeding after a year. Now he is two and half years old. Still milk secretion is there. And suddenly a month ago i saw the red colour discharge in my right breast. My Prolaction level is 30ng/ml/. Dr says it is a bit high and suggested Tablet Dopergine. Which I could not tolerate like vomitting, loss of appetite. So i consulted another dr. she told me take mammography. After reading your message i am also bit worried.

Hi Padma

I think my case is quite different from yours....as I dont have any child yet! I was pregnant in Nov 05 by taking clomiphene 50 mg. I was taking bromocriptine 3.75 mg at that time also. I had a missed abortion in January 05 at 8 weeks. The doctor mentioned that this discharge could be one of the possible reasons for miscarriage, as it didnt stop even after taking the dosage of 3.75mg!

Now I am ttc and am worried what is gonna happen this time since the discharge is still there. I remember that my prolactin level was 24 before I started with the medicine, which is normal according to the report. I am not able to understand why its there when the report shows its within normal range! And yes, my doctor also told me that this tablet would cause headache, vomiting or dizziness and I may faint also..so I should take it at night just before I go off to sleep. But so far, no such symptoms have appeared as I take 2.5 mg at night long before I go to sleep and 2.5 mg in the morning when I am working. I dont even feel that Ive taken the tablet. My doctor is quite surprised to know this, but she mentioned that each body reacts differently to the medicines!

Though yr level is slightly on the higher side, but that might be cos of breast feeding! I think Dopergine is also used to lower the raised prolactin levels. Yeah, may be you can get the mammography done...atleast you can rule out cancer if the test is negative!

Good luck!

Minnie
