Feeding:What mother should eat...???

Hi
My wife gave birth to a baby boy and he is 15 days old. I want to know what mother should eat and what not, such that baby gets healthy milk. Our elders say not to give mother - rice, cold foodstuff, cold milk, rajmah, chana, papaya, ladyfinger. She is fond of all these listed things - Can she take these? Will the baby get any difficulty if she takes these items?

Elders tell her to take desi ghee, panjiri with dry fruits, gond ladoos, pulses, and vegetables like ghiya and tori. Is it fine?

Please elaborate us as my wife is having diabetes but is taking Glycomet 500 and her sugar level is controlled. Also tell what should be the sugar level of a baby.

Jayant

Hi,
I'm mom of 2 months old and my daughter used to get fussy and also used to get diaper rash whenever I ate anything spicy, tomatoes, citrus furit/juice. I had to stop eating all that and I can't eat all that for as long as I breast feed. So, its important to look out for the breast feeding mom's diet.
Hope it helps

Hello,

You can ask your wife to take lau (white pumpkin). This is very good for milk production. You can make sambar with it (or) cook it and make it into a raita. She can also take sagoo, oats cooked in milk. Methi, jeera are also good. So whenever you cook something, you can add this as seasoning. Also garlic cooked in milk is good (But make sure to see if the baby reacts well to it. Sometimes they can have gas because of it). Basically she should eat healthy food - lot of salads and fruits.

I had taken rice, papaya, lady's finger, cold milk while I nursed the baby. My baby had no difficulty with it. Please see the reaction of the baby.

I hope this helps. Happy nursing!!
