X2 replied. Hi Shanthi,
Nikki has given some good suggestions for stuff to buy in the US.
From India - I would buy massage oil (I use dabur' s lal tel) for the baby and gripe water. You can also buy a few bottles for new born. Buy the small 4 oz ones. Even if you are planning to breast feed, it is a good idea to have a couple of bottles, just in case.
For yourself, you can buy 2-3 front open night gowns, a few nursing bras, nursing pads etc. Even though you get everything over here, it might take you some time to find the right store and you will be having tons of other stuff to do after moving..so I would buy these things already in India. You could also buy some ayurvedic stuff for after delivery recovery..check with elders in yr family as to what they suggest.
Rest all you can buy in the US.
In US - I would also buy a few packs of Pampers Swaddlers for newborn babies. Although the hospital will provider you with everything for a few days, yet its best to keep everything stocked for the first couple of weeks as you might not be able to go shopping just after delivery. Buy baby wipes that are non-alcoholic and non-perfumed. I buy Kirkland brand from Cotco.
For changing the babies diaper - the best thing I found was puppy mats in the pet section at walmart. you can put them on bed and then change the baby and carry them in your diaper bag..very, very useful. ( I had bought a changing table but never used it as I found mats to be much user friendly). You can even place them under the baby' s bedsheet when the baby is sleeping to avoid any accidents. :)
Baby clothes, as Nikki said, buy them in US only, as the quality will be much better and suitable for the climate. I like Carters brand baby clothing a lot. Most of the stores here have a baby' s section, but Babysrus is a good store to buy baby stuff like baby monitor, bath tub etc. You can check them online to have an idea.
hope this helps.
Nikki replied. Dear Shanthi,
Where in the US are you going to live? Some places have a winter and fall that is sometimes better or worse than other places.
You said the baby was going to be born in November. I live in Chicago, and some winters aren' t so bad, some are horrible (usually after January). The first thing you should get for your baby is an outer coat...a thick outer covering that looks like a sleeper, but is much thicker. You should also have a lot of blankets. With 2 of my 3 children born in the winter, I of course had
the coat
plenty of onesies (t-shirts that snap at the bottom, I like the long-sleeve ones for winter...think Wal-Mart' s Child of Mine brand by Carters) about 2 packages...there are 5 in a package...believe me, you' ll need them.
You can also stock up on newborn cotton pants. These are very soft and warm. They go great with the long sleeve onesies. They come in a variety of color. I would buy quite a few of these too.
Socks....get plain white padded socks...there are about 10 pair in a package
A sweater that can go over the long sleeve shirts, especially if they are in a drafty place.
Newborn caps....cotton, Gerber sells them in 3' s. Before my daughter was born, (she' s 1 now), I bought 2 packs.
You can never have enough receiving blankets (for swaddling), and you can even have 2 plush blankets and 1 blanket that is in between, soft, but not too fluffy. I used the plush blankets for when I was feeding the babies. As they get older, you can lay them on their stomach on the blankets.
Rule of thumb.....I was always told to put an extra layer of clothing on the baby than you have. You don' t want to overheat your baby, because that can cause serious problems. I think you' ll do o.k. though, that maternal instinct will kick in. Good luck!

RE: Eczema concern
Hello,
I had a similar query a few months ago concerning eczema occuring in toddlers. As far as I know, it can be due to a varrying number of factors and common foods that end up causing the condition in 1-2 year old toddlers.
In my research I found this article really helpful in addressing the problem:
