Feeding:Sleep-Feeding

Hi,
My son is 11 months old now. Since he was 3 months old, we have been sleep-feeding him ie. he takes his milk only when he's sleeping. We have to put him to sleep to feed him. In case he wakes up during the feed that's it ! he stops drinking. Now it is becoming very difficult to put him to sleep since he's big. I tried to feed him when he's awake but he will NOT take the bottle and after a while gets cranky.
Does anyone has this kind of problem? Any suggestion will be welcome.

Subject:  My daughter was drinking when asleep

My daughter was drinking milk when asleep since she was 2.5 months. This was related to silent acid reflux problem. We had to put her on medication to reduce the reflux. She was spitting less on the medications but still refusing the milk when awake. We started her on solids when she was 5 months. We gave solids when she was awake. She did not like solids a lot but she was not refusing them altogether. When she was around 8-9 months we started to give her milk when she was awake with spoon. She used to cry but then we entertained and distracted her with toys. Given the milk with spoon was much easiser and less time consuming. Also we did not had to wait for her to sleep.
I would suggest you talk to your pedtrician and find out that your baby does not have any silent acid reflux. Most babies with some reflux symtoms mild or strong tend not to drink milk when they are awake because they associated pain with drinking milk. When they are asleep they are not thinking and thats why they take the milk easily. As they grow older they will grow out of the reflux and will be much better with eating. At this stage try to give her/him as much as solids/pureed food when awake.

hi rachana,
i have a daughter who is almost 5 yrs now.i had the same problem with her.but then she turned out great.so do not worry.if your lil one feeds when he sleeps let him do that.
now in a matter of a month he will be 1yr.then he would need only 16ozs of milk.u can feed him once just before he wakes up in the morn and then 1 feed right after he has retired for bed at night.as long as u do not add sugar in the milk he will be fine(u will not have to worry about tooth decay).formula really tastes yucky.whole milk tastes good ,he will be fine.
best of luck
sumitha
