Feeding:Milk has stopped !!@

Hello everyone,
I have a just 9 month completed baby and trying to pump twice at work to give him the BM. Overall I nurse him only 3 times a day, sometimes 4 times. Morning before I start to work, during lunch hour (he usually doesn't nurse well these days at this feeding) and again in the night before his bedtime.
Maybe because of the long gap I give between the Afternoon feeding and night time OR what, I don't know, I started feeling that my milk is lowering in amount. But I was not able to change this as he will not drink milk in the evening as it's his dinner time (solid).
So I was happy with the way how I was feeding him. BUt suddenly today in my morning session I didn't get any milk at all. After trying for 5-7 minutes all I got was .5 oz, that is just half ounce. I feel teribble. So sad and depressed too. Please some one give me some advice to increase the milk flow. Yesterday I noticed that to less than the usual amount, but I didn't expect the milk to stop completely like this. PLEAASE... Any advice??!!!

I have the same worry as you. When my son didn't eat solids he would drink about 20 oz of milk a day. That is my estimate (since I can't measure how much he is actually drinking when he is breastfeeding). When he started solids he lost interest in milk. I find it easier to breastfeed him when he is asleep. So I try to nurse him at bedtime and just before he wakes up in the morning. During the day the max he will drink in a bottle is 4 oz.
Starting last week, I have stopped nursing him at bedtime. So he is nursing only once a day (approx 5 oz).
During the day, I have started mixing two scoops of formula in the breastmilk so that it is equivalent to 8 oz.

My son's pediatrician says he should be taking about 14 - 16 oz of milk everyday. But my son only takes about 13 oz of milk. The way I make up for this is by giving him yogurt. He loves yogurt and usually takes 4 - 6 oz of yogurt everyday. He likes the plain whole milk yogurt as well as flavored yogurt. I think he prefers the plain one. I give him yogurt after each meal. I also try to give him breastmilk or formula with cereal in the morning but most days he doesn't want it. I keep trying everyday anyway.

My son is 11 months old. He is still nursing exclusively except for solid food. I've been working full time since he was 3 months old. I pump twice at work exactly at the same time that he takes milk from the bottle. I've often had anxious phases when I thought my milk had reduced. I know exactly how you feel. So far it has always been temporary. Babies change the amount they take, so your milk level will also go up and down.
From what I have read everywhere, milk production is never the root of the problem. The problem is the let-down. If you can remove milk, then more milk will be produced.
* The let-down is related to your emotional state, so you should relax. Think about your baby. Don't get stressed about anything at all.
* Drink a glass of water before pumping.
* Don't be anxious about how much milk you can pump. After all, your baby won't go hungry. You can always give him more solids or formula.
* Don't use too high a setting on your pump.
* Make sure you always pump for at least 10 minutes.
* Use compression (massage) when your baby is nursing.
* Make sure you get enough sleep at night.
All these things helped me a lot.

I've also noticed that if I pump right after the baby has nursed I don't get much milk out even from the breast that he hasn't nursed on. I think it has to do with the fact that the let down has already happened and won't happen again.
Pretty complicated all this, huh? :-)
Check out the site www(dot)kellymom(dot)com. They have lots of advice.
If you switch to formula, then you can assume that your milk will reduce further and you will have begun the weaning process - which is OK too at 9 months.

Hi Ritu,
Thank you so much for giving me a reply. First of all I should say that after that 1-2 times, I started producing few ozs of milk again (at my pumping sessions). May be I think I was stressed out too much and emotinally disturbed on that day I think. which is possible because of the work load I had on those weeks.

Now after reading your reply I am trying to stay cool if not calm atleast while I am at my pumping sessions! You said that you have been nursing him and able to continue till now and he takes only your milk other than solids. My baby is kind of doing the same. Except taking the milk I extract at work and the nursing times, he is not taking much formula. We use that while making solids for him- in cereals. My worry is he is not getting enough milk. How much milk a 10 month old needs to drink?! He takes/drinks hardly 10-12 ozs of milk daily. Is this enough for his age?! Please advice.
