Feeding:Pls advise - 3 month old refuses to drink milk

I have a 3 month old daugther who does not want to drink milk when she is awake. She only drinks milk when she is sleeping. She had some problems when she was born and was in the IICU for a month and half. In IICU she was getting my milk thru a NG tube and now since she is home we try to feed her my milk (I am using a pump) thru a bottle. She does really good when she is sleeping, she some time takes more than 3 ounces but when she is awake she refuses to take the bottle. I tried nursing too but she does not like that either. Even when she is refusing the bottle, she takes the pacifier right away.

We are able to give her the required quantity and she has been gaining weight so far but she takes it only when she is sleeping. Please advise if you have faced or heard of similar problem with a kid this young. We are also wondering if we should try the formula?

Thanks in advance for your help!!!

Priya,

Happy to hear that your darling is in a good health but concern is about having milk when she is sleeping. I didn't face this problem. I was totally confused when inspite my daughter tummy being full, she used to cry. I faced this problem for complete 3 months. But after that she started behaving like a good girl.

Frankly speaking, We cannot predict about babies behaviour as they as so small, cute and darling. May be when her 4th month starts, when she starts recognising people, she may get adjusted and start drinking when she is awake. Because during that time, they respond to surrounding very well and even we are able to understand them.

If she continue, I think it will be good if your consult a good paediatric or child specialist. They may help you out.

Priya,
My son who is seven months old is going through the same problem. He only takes his bottle after going to sleep or while sleeping. He was born 1and 1/2 months premature and was in the NICU for 1 month.I used to pump and feed him breast milk through a tube in his nose. After coming home he started drinking around 3 ounces from a bottle and till today he still drinks 3 ounces every 3 hours. He is not meeting his minimum daily requirement but he is growing slowly and the doctors are not worried. Just wanted to let you know that you are not alone.
