Due Date Club November 2003:Cribs?

Hey girls,
Have you bought a crib for your babies yet? I don't want to spend a lot of money on the crib since we plan to go back to India soon. Does anyone have any idea abt cribs sold in Walmart/Kmart/Target? They seem to be cheaper than the cribs at BabiesRUs. But I have no idea abt the quality of these cribs.
Has anyone bought cribs from these stores or knows anything abt them?
Any info will be useful.
Thanks
-M

Thanks for all the info girls.
Simmi, we do get portable cribs over here also. Although I don't think I will carry the crib back to India, it might be simpler to dispose it off here and get something new in India.
Ritu, I didn't know Ikea also has cribs. I will definitely look into that option coz I think Ikea has good stuff.
Avi, Vindhya you are right, as long as the crib meets all the safety checks it should not matter where we buy it from. Vindhya, I thought babies could start sleeping in the crib rightaway. DO we have to wait for 3-6 mths before the baby can use a crib? Let me know, coz in that case looks like a bassinet will be required.

Thanks
Madhura

Hi M,

I think it's more of a convenience sake. Since the cribs are kind of hollow, it'll be hard to lift the baby up and we have to be extra careful since they are very delicate for the first few months. I guess, it's a personal choice. I've also heard that some new borns wouldn't sleep on a crib, so you make them used to bassinets and then transfer them to a crib after a few months. If you are buying a crib, buy one that can be opened sideways, so it'll be easy to lift the baby.

Definitely, cribs are more sturdier and safer for the babies.

Hope others would have some input here.

Hi M. Seeing that u may be going back to India, we do get travel cribs here in UK. They are sturdy and foldable and can be taken back with u to India. They don't come in very big size though but surely first 2 yrs should be fine. They cost less however security check has to be met for them as well. U can always make it cozier by putting accessories around. Have a look around, maybe u find something u like in that range too. Good luck.

Hi Simmi,

In Australia they advise heavily against putting anything in the crib with the baby. Pls check my message posted a few days back. It was titled 'SIDS & KIDS '.Pls download the brochure and have a look.

Take Care

Hi,

I have bought a crib as I will be in Melbourne for a quite a while and did not want to be stuck with the additional problem of disposing off the bassinnet later. I bought my crib from Ikea..for $350 aussie which converts into a junior bed later and I also found a matching change table cum chest of drawers with it for aussie $350 ..other cribs were for $700 + additional for change table...i did nor buy an expensive crib as we may get bored of it and if we buy an expensive one we will be stuck with it for a longer time.. I guess the only important thing to see is that the crib meets the safety stds/ regulations..

I have also bought a cocoon/ basket for the baby for the first 6-8 months..as I will be going to India for 6 weeks in Jan and do not want to carry the pram to India....some really neat baskets/cocoons are available..

also keep in mind the option of a change table cum chest of drawers as it reaally is helping me keep baby's clothes organised..

let us know how u go..take care-Ritu

Hey M... I have decided to buy a bassinet for now and go for the crib after the baby grows out of it...

I did look at some of the cribs on target's website and they sure look nice and sturdy too... For a crib, we need to make sure they were evaluated for crib safety.. as long as they passed the safety check, I dont think whether we buy it should matter much..

Vindhya, sorry to hear about the uncertainty regarding your stay here.. I hope everything turns out the way you want it too....

Vindhya, cribs usually come with a certificate/seal that says that it meets the national/state/industry standards for safety..
According to my info, a JPMA certification seal is what we need to look for when we are on the look out for cribs..

Hi M,

Even I am not sure about my status here, we might have to go back anytime next year. So, planning to buy a bassinet for now. Incase we stay for another year, then I'll go for a crib later. Anyway, the baby wouldn't be able to sleep on it until three-six months.

I saw one at WalMart last week for 99$, it sure looked good.

Diaper Service Provider,Bangalore
Hi,
Does anyone know if there is a Diaper Service Provider in Bangalore? They generally provide cloth diapers and replace them with a new set every 2-3 days.

Thanks in advance
