Hello, I'm new to Indian schools. Could you help me understand the HUGE emphasis on penmanship? Every playschool I've visited has been: dirty, few if any toys and the ones they have are dirty and broken, the crafts are extremely uncreative, the kids spend a large amount of time sitting and waiting for the teachers to get their lessons together, and the the rest of the time writing numbers and letters until their hands are numb. How is making a 3 year old write the alphabet beneficial? Why is there no emphasis on creative thinking? Again, why on earth is penmanship deemed so wonderful that it takes up the entire school day for these little kids who would enjoy and I think SHOULD enjoy much more stimulating activities?

It is really very easy to teach children to write. But there are a few guidelines which the adults must follow.
1. Be patient
2. give them paper and pencil and let them scribble as much as they want to.
3. Parallaly you also write someting on a paper. It is only this way they will learn to write and also make a comparison between as to how he /she is writing and your writing in a positive. If you find any improvement appreciate them eg : by giving a star

There is no short reply as it has to do with historic developments in this country.

I would recommend to look for a good Montessori school, but beware there are many schools that use the word Montessori in their name but they don't use the Montessori material and method. Always ask to see the Montessori equipment and check whether teachers are Montessori trained.

You can find lots of information about the Montessori method on the Internet.
