how are you and your babies doing?
Iam actually from AP,India and got settled in USA . iam new to this board.very useful...esp. for firsttime moms.(like me)
I have a concern, my 5 month old cutie is having cold and congestion for the past week. I used pediacare oral drops as per dr advice and am using saline drops and removing excess mucus with bulb syringe. but they are not helping much.I don't want to use any other oral medicine at this stage. I want to know if there is any home remedy to treat cold and congestion.
any advice is of great help.

i'm from chicago. and have a 1 1/2 month old son. he had severe cough and nose congestion. i tried so many things. but what i think worked was - steam. just give steam to the baby for 10 mins and i added few vicks drops in it. he recovered in 2 days then. i used to give him steaming 3 times a day.

Unfortunately, a cold has to run its course. But there are a few things I have tried to relieve my son's symptoms:

- Cold mist humidifier in baby's room
- Run a hot shower in the shower stall for 5 mins. Once it gets misty take your baby inside. It helps to relieve congestion
- Keep the baby's head elevated during sleep. Use a pillow (make sure he/she does not suffocate) or elevate one side of the mattress
- My mom used to apply a very light dab of Vicks on his pillow and sheets. You can even rub a very small quantity of Vicks on the chest, under the foot and back. I was apprehensive of doing this initially but don't worry. Use a very small amount.
- If you are breastfeeding, consume black pepper.

Just wait for the cold to go away :-) A medicine will not work.
