A friend asked my daughter, who is in 6th standard, \" There were 4 ants in a row, and 2 more joined. How many were there?\" . My daughter was unable to answer this.

I was shocked.

I tried to understand the issue at a deeper level. She knows the procedure (how to add), but is uncomfortable with the application (*when* to add).

Probing further, I found that her class 3,4,5 teachers gave her worksheets on specific topics. So my daughter knew that \" addition is coming in the exam\" . She added the numbers, got good marks, and everyone was happy.

Now the cracks are starting to show.

I understand from the example that there is a little bit of concept mathematics that is lacking. No issues, i feel instead of you giving direct addition and subtraction try to give her day to day practical small problems. Live examples. That is give her 5 chocolates and then give her 2 more and then ask her to count the total. Then in a piece of papergive the samre thing as a sum. Try it out
She is fine.
