try replacing tv with books, rent as many books as possible with lots of picture stories for the younger ones. they will develop the habit of reading books instead of watching tv. also try setting examples. people around children should always read and write a lot. so the children get into the habit of reading. if your child disobeys your instructions, take a piece of paper and write what you expected your child to do and what the child is doing. this helps them understand that you are serious and also cultivates a habit of reading. i tried it with my daughter and it worked.
tv just curtails the children's imagination while books just takes their imagination to a levels that cannot be explained. books are the best way to make our child have life-long enthusiastic learners.
